Position Summary:
Performs manual brazing and soldering operations to join copper and aluminum components used in heat exchangers, condensers, and evaporators. Responsible for ensuring high-quality, leak-free joints that meet company and customer specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Assemble coil components (tubes, headers, return bends, distributors, fittings) prior to brazing according to work orders and drawings. Braise copper tubing and fittings using oxy-acetylene or induction torch techniques following prescribed procedures and standards. Control flame temperature, filler material, and heat time to achieve consistent, leak-free joints without overheating or oxidation. Prepare joints for brazing by cleaning, aligning, and properly fluxing as required. Inspect completed brazed joints visually and through pressure/leak tests to ensure integrity and appearance. Identify and repair leaks or weak joints using proper rework techniques. Maintain brazing tools and torches, replacing tips, cleaning nozzles, and checking gas pressures daily. Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work instructions to determine assembly and brazing requirements. Handle and stage materials safely, including copper tubing, nitrogen, flux, and gases. Record production and quality data (joint counts, repairs, test results) accurately in logs or ERP systems. Comply with all safety procedures related to open flame, pressurized gases, and hot materials. Support continuous improvement efforts in quality, safety, and process efficiency. Assist in training new brazers or operators when assigned. Report equipment malfunctions or material issues promptly to supervisors or maintenance.
Qualifications:
Required:
Demonstrated proficiency with oxy-acetylene torch operation and control of flame type, temperature, and filler rod use. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and assembly diagrams. Strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for precision joints in tight spaces. Competence in measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, gauges, and pressure meters. Ability to identify defective joints, poor wetting, or overheating and correct them promptly. Knowledge of torch maintenance, gas cylinder handling, and regulator adjustment. Strong focus on quality and consistency — able to meet appearance and integrity standards with minimal rework. Commitment to safety practices involving hot work, open flames, and pressurized gases. Positive attitude toward teamwork, cross-training, and continuous improvement.
Preferred:
High school diploma or
GED. 3-6
months of related experience and/or training.
