JOB SUMMARY

The Bench Jeweler is a full-time position (40 hours/week) responsible for both basic and advanced jewelry repair and stone setting. Primary responsibility includes providing exceptional customer service in a cost-effective manner by handling all levels of jewelry repair and restoration in-house. The Bench Jeweler must be proficient in and be prepared to personally handle repairs on high end and basic jewelry including working with all metals (gold, silver, platinum) as well as handling unique and precious stones.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES

Perform necessary basic and high-end repair and restoration on jewelry sent in by customers. Work with all types of metals and various gemstones including precious and semi-precious. Stone setting includes working with intricate and unique settings. Review service jobs for condition and necessity of materials Assist in design and/or creative techniques to meet customers' needs. Handle maintenance duties in the shop ensuring a safe and clean environment. Effectively manage and document workload. Utilize computerized Point of Sale system to access, transfer and edit jobs. Work with customers when needed to answer questions and discuss options. Utilize laser welding and the latest in laser welding technology. Perform service and store related tasks as required by supervisors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

5+ years' experience as a Bench Jeweler in a high-end, high-volume environment is preferred.

EQUIPMENT USE AND EXPECTATIONS

Torch Work & Fabrication:

Proper handling of oxygen and natural gas including monitoring of pressure gauges, environment conditions (presence of chemicals and accelerants), regulation of flames and overall cognizance of shop safety.

Gas & Pressure Safety:

Skilled in safe management of oxygen and natural gas lines, assessing shop hazards, monitoring pressure gauges, etc.

Precision Cutting Tools:

Experience with traditional Jewelers saw, flexible shaft machines, hand jigs, etc.

Drilling, Milling & Shaping:

Competent in using flexible shafts for drilling and burring, grinding wheels, files and emery, etc.

Bench Tools & Findings:

Mastered the use of pliers, cutters, tweezers, gravers, setting tools, vices and holders, magnifiers, etc.

Precious Metals Management:

Expert handling of precious metals and solders.

Workshop Chemicals:

Proper handling and management of bench top chemicals: flux, fire scale solutions, heat shields, metal test acids, pickling solutions, cleaning solutions, plating solutions, attack glue and epoxy remover.

Polishing & Finishing:

Proper use of high-speed polish machines, various abrasive rouges and buffs, proper adherence to all safety requirements (dust masks, safety glasses or goggles and finger/body protection. Periodic cleaning and sweep of all machines.

Microscope Stone Setting:

Precision and expertise for setting stones, especially melee stones.

Refining & Shop Organization:

Dedicated to maintaining a clean, organized and safe working environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This role requires regular sitting, talking, hearing, and manual dexterity; frequent standing, walking, and reaching; occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting up to 10lbs. Standard vision abilities (including color vision and depth perception) are required, alongside the use of a jeweler loupe or magnification equipment. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals to perform essential functions in compliance with the ADA.
