Job Description:
The CNC Machinist III (Lead) is a senior-level, highly skilled machinist responsible for performing complex setups, precision machining, troubleshooting, and process optimization. This position provides technical leadership and mentorship within the CNC department and ensures production goals are met while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. The Machinist III leads by example — supporting engineering, programming, and quality teams — and serves as a technical resource for CNC Machinists I and II in a high-mix, low-volume precision manufacturing environment that includes both metal and plastic materials. Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following: Advanced Setup & Operation Perform complex setups on CNC mills, lathes, and routers, including multi-axis operations. Load and qualify tooling, set work offsets, and perform first-article inspections to validate setups. Edit, optimize, and occasionally create CNC programs directly at the machine when required. Work with close tolerances on a variety of materials, including plastics (Delrin, acrylic, polycarbonate) and metals (aluminum, stainless steel). Prove out new jobs, troubleshoot tool paths, and validate process repeatability. Leadership & Mentorship Serve as a technical mentor for CNC Machinist I and II employees. Assist supervision with scheduling and daily work prioritization. Train operators in safe machining practices, tool selection, and proper setup procedures. Act as a liaison between production and engineering to communicate technical issues or improvement opportunities. Quality & Continuous Improvement Verify part dimensions and surface finishes using precision instruments (micrometers, indicators, CMMs). Approve first-article inspections and monitor ongoing part conformance throughout production. Support root cause analysis and corrective action processes for machining-related nonconformances. Recommend and implement tooling, process, or program improvements to increase efficiency and quality. Participate in
ISO 9001
/ AS9100 and lean manufacturing initiatives. Process & Documentation Create and maintain setup sheets, tool lists, and process notes for repeat jobs. Support engineering with prototype builds and manufacturability feedback (DFM). Support implementation of new machines, tools and technology. Maintain accurate machine and production documentation in the ERP/MRP system. Collaborate with maintenance and quality teams on equipment calibration, upkeep, and documentation. Safety & Maintenance Follow all company safety guidelines and wear required PPE. Keep machines and work areas clean and organized following 5S standards. Report maintenance or safety concerns immediately. Workplace & Organization Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work area at all times. Follow all Company safety procedures, including those related to hazardous materials handling. Participate in 5S and lean manufacturing activities to promote workplace efficiency and safety. Teamwork & Culture Collaborate with other machinists, fabricators, and quality staff to meet production goals. Collaborate with programmers, engineers, and quality staff to resolve production issues. Communicate clearly with the next shift and maintain accurate shop documentation. Demonstrate and uphold Peak's Core Values and Behavioral Fundamentals in all daily activities. Experience/Knowledge Requirements High school diploma or GED; technical certificate or trade school training preferred. 7 plus years of CNC Machining experience, including multi-axis setups and troubleshooting. Mastery of blueprint reading, GD&T, and precision measuring tools. Strong G-Code comprehension and CAM system familiarity. Ability to communicate verbally in English, to understand technical directions on blueprints, travelers, and computer screens in English and to create understandable written job status report for shift changes. Physical Requirements Regularly required to stand for extended periods and use hands to handle small components and tools. Frequent bending, reaching, and working with fine motor movements.
