Job Description

Job Title:
CNC Mill Machinist Job Description The CNC Mill Machinist independently takes parts from engineering print to finished product on vertical milling centers. This role involves setting up machines, selecting tooling and materials, downloading and running CNC programs, and ensuring parts meet tight aerospace tolerances. The machinist works closely with engineering to optimize machining processes and performs precise inspection using a variety of measuring tools and CMM equipment. Responsibilities Take parts from engineering drawings to completed components independently, managing the full machining process from start to finish. Read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings accurately to determine machining requirements. Set up CNC vertical milling machines, including installing and adjusting vices, fixtures, and jaws, and touching off and building off tools. Select appropriate tooling and materials based on part requirements, tolerances, and machine capabilities. Download, load, and run the correct CNC programs as needed to produce parts to specification. Work directly with engineering to improve machining processes, provide feedback, and support continuous improvement initiatives. Troubleshoot machining issues by making necessary adjustments and offsets when parts do not meet specifications. Work with tight tolerances, including ±0.0005 inch, to meet aerospace quality standards. Perform first-piece inspections using CMM machines and precision gauging tools such as air gauges, height gauges, calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring instruments. Perform changeovers, including adjustments, setting up fixtures, locking out vices, and swapping out tooling as required. Use CNC controls (Fanuc and Mitsubishi) to operate and adjust machine parameters during production. Support operation of 3- to 5-axis machining centers and work with various metals, including stainless steel, mild steel, and carbon steel. Collaborate with team members in the machine shop to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Use Mastercam or similar CAM software to make edits or changes to CNC programs when needed (if experienced). Essential Skills At least 2 years of CNC milling experience. Experience setting up CNC milling machines, including fixtures, vices, and tooling. Hands-on experience with vertical milling machines. Ability to perform changeovers, make adjustments, set up fixtures, and lock out vices. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and engineering drawings. Ability to swap out and manage own tooling during setup and production. Experience working with CNC controls, particularly Fanuc or Mitsubishi. Capability to work with tight tolerances, including ±0.0005 inch. Proficiency in using precision measuring and inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, air gauges, and other gauging tools. Experience working on CNC milling operations in a production or machine shop environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications 5+ years of CNC vertical milling experience with full setups on similar machines in an aerospace environment using Fanuc or Mitsubishi controls (ideal profile). 3+ years of CNC milling experience with some setup responsibilities (strong, acceptable profile). Experience with 3- to 5-axis machining centers. Experience working primarily with stainless steel, as well as mild steel and carbon steel. Experience with Haas, DMG Mori, Mazak, or similar vertical milling and turning centers. Familiarity with Mastercam software to edit or modify CNC programs is a strong plus. Experience performing first-piece inspections using CMM equipment. Comfort working in a precision-focused aerospace or high-tolerance manufacturing environment.
