CNC Machinist Job Description This role focuses on setting up and operating CNC turning and milling machines in a cell-based manufacturing environment. You will perform precision machining operations on lathes and mills, primarily working with Mori Seiki and Doosan equipment, while ensuring all parts meet tight specifications using blueprints, G and M code, and precision measuring tools. The position offers a clear path for advancement and the opportunity to grow into a higher-level machinist role. Responsibilities Set up and operate CNC turning and milling machines, including lathes and mills, within a cell that contains multiple machines. Perform 1-3 CNC set-ups per day, selecting and installing the appropriate tooling, fixtures, and materials for each job. Utilize and interpret blueprints, drawings, sample parts, and engineering information to determine machining methods, sequences of operations, and required dimensions and tolerances. Program and adjust CNC machines using G and M code as needed to achieve required specifications. Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and workpieces onto machines safely and accurately. Set up, adjust, and operate basic machine tools and specialized or advanced variations to perform precision machining operations. Machine parts to exact specifications using machine tools such as lathes and milling machines. Use precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, height stands, and similar tools, to check parts and verify conformance to specifications. Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects, ensuring they meet all dimensional and quality requirements. Monitor machine feed and speed during machining operations and make adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency. Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose malfunctions and determine the need for adjustments or repairs. Check workpieces throughout the process to ensure they are properly lubricated and cooled. Position, fasten, and secure workpieces correctly before and during machining. Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency after set-up or adjustments. Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter and to maintain optimal performance. Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and precision instruments. Advise internal stakeholders about the materials being used for finished products when needed. Confer with engineering, supervisory, manufacturing personnel, and cutting tool suppliers to exchange technical information and continuously improve tool life and machining processes. Design and create basic fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to support special engineering needs. Recognize when equipment, processes, or parts are not functioning correctly and escalate issues appropriately. Operate one or more CNC machines daily while maintaining all quality, safety, and housekeeping requirements. Essential Skills At least 3 years of machining and/or CNC setup experience. Hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes. Ability to perform multiple CNC set-ups per day, including selecting appropriate tooling and fixtures. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints on a daily basis. Working knowledge of G and M code for CNC programming and adjustments. Experience operating and working within CNC cells, running more than one machine at a time. Strong understanding of machining processes for both turning and milling operations. Ability to calculate dimensions and tolerances using basic mathematics and precision instruments. Proficiency using precision measuring tools, including micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, and height stands. Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) concepts. Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and make appropriate adjustments to machines and processes. Capability to recognize when something is wrong or likely to go wrong and respond appropriately. Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 30 pounds as needed. Ability to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for 8 hours or more per shift. Commitment to following all quality and safety requirements while operating CNC equipment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Basic blueprint reading skills with the ability to apply them in daily machining work. Experience with changeovers and efficiently transitioning between different jobs and set-ups. Exposure to CAD/CAM systems to support programming and process development. Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar design software for understanding part models and fixtures. Experience designing and creating basic fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts for engineering projects. Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing teams. Comfort working with cutting tool suppliers to improve tool life and machining performance. Strong attention to detail and a focus on producing high-quality, precise components.
