Job Title:
1st Shift CNC Lathe Machinist Job Description This role offers an opportunity for an experienced CNC Lathe Machinist to perform full machine setups in a small, close-knit job shop environment. You will handle complete setups, offsets, tooling changes, and precision machining while reading and interpreting G/M code and detailed blueprints. The position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to hold tight tolerances, and confidence working with precision measurement tools on a busy first-shift schedule. Responsibilities Perform full setups on CNC lathes, including loading programs, setting tools, and preparing machines for production. Execute multiple setups and change-overs per day, typically handling 2-5 setups or change-outs in a job shop environment. Adjust offsets and make real-time machining adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and part quality. Change out tooling as needed, ensuring proper tool selection, installation, and verification for each job. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and job travelers to understand part specifications and machining requirements. Interpret and work with G and M code to verify, adjust, and troubleshoot CNC programs at the machine control. Hold and verify tight tolerances to approximately half-thousandths using precision measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers. Operate one or two CNC lathes simultaneously while maintaining quality and throughput expectations. Use precision measurement tools to perform in-process and final inspections, documenting results as required. Occasionally operate an overhead crane or hoist to safely move parts and materials as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following shop procedures and safety guidelines. Collaborate with team members and leadership to resolve machining issues and continuously improve processes. Essential Skills 3-5+ years of job shop machining experience, including performing multiple setups and change-outs per day. 5+ years of CNC lathe experience in a production or job shop environment. Proven ability to perform full CNC lathe setups, including tooling changes and machine adjustments. Ability to manage 2-5 setups or change-overs per day while maintaining quality and efficiency. Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Solid understanding of G and M code and the ability to work with code at the machine control. Demonstrated ability to hold tight tolerances to approximately half-thousandths. Proficiency with precision measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers. Capability to operate one or more CNC lathes simultaneously while maintaining consistent quality. Additional Skills & Qualifications Ability to program CNC G-code directly from a print or 3D model. Experience programming with Mastercam or Fusion. Ownership of personal precision measurement tools (micrometers and calipers), demonstrating commitment to the trade. Experience operating overhead cranes or hoists in a machine shop environment. Professional, collaborative attitude suited to a small, close-knit shop environment. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in a small machine shop with approximately 12 employees, creating a close-knit and personable atmosphere where team members interact daily and owners are onsite and accessible. The position operates on a first shift schedule, Monday through Friday, from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., providing consistent daytime hours. You will work primarily on CNC lathes in a job shop setting, frequently performing multiple setups and change-overs. The environment includes the use of precision measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers, and may involve occasional use of an overhead crane or hoist to move parts. The shop expects a professional demeanor, teamwork, and a focus on maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient workspace. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elkhart, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
