CNC Machinist Job Description This role is responsible for operating CNC and manual machine tools to produce precision metal parts in a manufacturing environment. You will set up, operate, and adjust equipment to ensure parts meet exact specifications, while maintaining safety, quality, and efficiency throughout the machining process. Responsibilities Operate machine tools such as saws, lathes, milling machines, grinders, and CNC mills to produce precision metal parts in various quantities. Review and interpret electronic and written blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and machining requirements. Calculate cutting and boring locations using appropriate measuring devices to ensure accuracy and adherence to specifications. Set up and secure workpieces correctly on machines to ensure safe and precise cutting operations. Determine appropriate feed speeds and cutting parameters for each job to optimize quality and efficiency. Determine the amount of material to remove based on blueprints and job requirements, ensuring parts meet final dimensions. Select suitable tools, fixtures, and materials for each machining operation. Plan the sequence of cutting, drilling, boring, and finishing operations to achieve the desired part configuration. Change out tooling and blades as needed, ensuring tools are properly installed, aligned, and maintained. Perform CNC machine setups, including loading programs, setting offsets, and verifying first-piece quality. Use drill presses, shears, and other shop equipment to support machining and fabrication tasks. Inspect parts during and after machining to verify that they meet precise specifications and quality standards. Make basic edits to CNC programs as needed to improve part quality or machining efficiency, where qualified. Support welding, assembly, and other manufacturing processes as needed, within skill level. Follow all safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean, organized work area. Essential Skills 3+ years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing or machine shop environment. Hands-on experience operating CNC mills and lathes to produce precision metal components. Ability to read and interpret electronic and written blueprints, including dimensions and tolerances. Proficiency with CNC machine setup and operation, including loading tools, setting offsets, and verifying first-piece quality. Experience operating drill presses, shears, and other machine shop equipment. Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot basic machining issues and adjust processes as needed. Ability to use measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers, and other precision tools to calculate and verify cuts and bores. Capability to plan the sequence of machining and finishing operations to achieve the required part geometry. Comfort working with non-climate-controlled manufacturing equipment and environments. Willingness and ability to work flexible hours within the operating window of approximately 5:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and some Saturdays as needed. Additional Skills & Qualifications Preferably a 2-year vocational degree in machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field. Mill experience is strongly preferred and considered a plus. Experience editing CNC programs is a plus. Welding experience is preferred and beneficial for supporting additional shop operations. Prior experience with CNC lathes and CNC milling machines. Familiarity with general machine operation, including setup and safe operation of various shop tools. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise parts. Work Environment This position is based in a manufacturing shop that includes welding, machining, assembly, packing, and shipping operations. The facility is non-climate controlled, so temperatures will vary with the seasons. You will work around active machinery, welding areas, and material handling equipment, following established safety procedures at all times. The standard shift is 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the expectation of flexibility to work within an operating window of approximately 5:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and some Saturdays as needed to meet production demands. Required personal protective equipment includes steel-toe footwear, safety glasses, and appropriate work attire such as jeans, in line with shop safety and dress guidelines. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lenexa, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $37.00/hr.
