Job Title:
Prototype Machinist Job Description We are seeking an experienced Prototype Machinist to join our dynamic team. This individual will be responsible for transforming prints or models into parts, collaborating with engineering on manufacturing process maps, selecting raw materials, designing and fabricating fixtures, selecting and setting up tooling, programming in Mastercam and at the machine, machining components, verifying dimensions, and delivering parts to metrology for CMM inspection and validation. The role demands strong CNC machinist skills, the ability to read complex technical drawings, and the capacity to work with engineering and manufacturing teams to determine stock material sizes, tool lists, and fixturing needs. Responsibilities Review engineering drawings, instructions, blueprints, and make suggestions for fixturing and achieving prototype and producibility objectives. Program, set up, and operate 3, 4, and 5 axis milling centers. Program, set up, and operate CNC turning centers with live tooling and C axis. Program, set up, and operate CNC turning centers with live tooling, twin turret, twin spindle, with bar feeder. Maintain tight tolerances during machining processes. Inspect machined parts using calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, dial indicators, and other basic inspection equipment. Assist in inspection, precision assembly, or preparation of time/material cost worksheets for new job estimates. Set up and breakdown machinery, and select, procure, and assemble tooling. Essential Skills Minimum of 7 years of CNC lathe/milling experience in programming and setup (10+ years preferred). Experience with wire EDM preferred but not required. Programming using Mastercam, with familiarity in alternate software such as Fusion 360/GibbsCam considered. Proficient in GD&T and interpreting engineering drawings. Ability to work from models or drawings and design fixtures using 3D modeling software. Ability to diagnose and fix programming errors or mechanical issues quickly. Proficiency in writing, editing, and troubleshooting G-code and M-code directly at the machine controller. Additional Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; technical certificate or associate's degree in manufacturing/machining preferred. Proven experience as a CNC Machinist. Must be able to obtain Secret clearance. Must be a US Citizen. Pre-employment background check and drug screen required. Ability to lift 30 lbs. or more. The role will be split between our manufacturing and prototype shop in Rockaway and services on base at Picatinny Arsenal. The work environment includes managing ongoing programs and supporting contracts, RFPs, and proposals for new bids. We specialize in munitions, weapons, and system integration, with a focus on performing at the point of extreme need. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Rockaway, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $78000.00 - $98000.00/yr. 401(k) with company match, 100% immediate vesting. Medical/dental/vision coverage (Employer paid for single).
