What You'll Do:
Set up and operate a variety of machine shop tools, including manual lathes, grinders, milling machines, drill presses, and more. Perform maintenance and repairs on light and heavy machinery, working from detailed blueprints, templates, and sketches. Machine, form, and finish tools, holders, and parts for dies, jigs, fixtures, and other components to exacting tolerances. Secure workpieces using chucks, clamps, and fixtures to prevent distortion and misalignment. Use precision measuring tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, and calipers to ensure work meets specifications. Select appropriate speeds, feeds, and tools for the job and replace or grind tools as necessary. Perform welding (MIG and/or stick) for repairs and maintenance tasks. Troubleshoot, dismantle, and repair propulsion and steering components, including propellers, shafts, and rudders. Inspect and check completed work to ensure adherence to specifications and tolerances.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, templates, and sketches. Experience operating and maintaining equipment such as lathes, boring mills, drill presses, and grinders. Strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to quality workmanship. Ability to work in confined spaces and handle physically demanding tasks.
Essential Physical Functions:
Lift and transport loads of up to 75 pounds over distances of up to 100 feet. Position yourself to manipulate objects 30-40 times during an 8-hour shift. Work in confined spaces and operate tools in challenging environments.
