Job Description

Job Description The full-time Machinist Trainer is responsible for the delivery of training curricula to Electric Boat new hire Machinists as part of NEIT's Shipbuilding and Advanced Manufacturing Institute (SAMI). The Machinist Trainer must have knowledge and experience performing manual and CNC machinist skills that are required to effectively perform in an industrial setting. Must have the ability to effectively present and deliver training following a curriculum in an educational/training setting that incorporates both classroom and hands-on learning. Position requires proficiency in trade specific skills, oral presentations, report and record keeping, interpersonal interactions, classroom management and computer skills. The Machinist Trainer will ensure that all training takes place in accordance with required safety protocols. Supervisory and management skills are a plus. Supervision Received Works under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Workforce Development Grants and Programs. Both will review the SAMI Machine Trainer's work for effectiveness and conformance with policy. Supervision Exercised Will supervise part-time instructional staff as assigned. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the 2 nd shift Full-time Trainer for the SAMI Machine Training Program, a program which provides foundational skills for Electric Boat new hires in the machinist trades. Training is delivered in 8-to-10-week cycles, depending on the trade, throughout the year.
  • Will oversee and deliver training curricula for training programs developed under the direction of NEIT's Center for Technology and Industry and Electric Boat
  • Will oversee and manage part-time instructional staff
  • Will ensure that training is on pace with the curricula for each training cohort Prepare materials and provide lectures, laboratory instruction according to the required curriculum Follow current course outlines, objectives, and evaluation mechanisms for the program, to include Competency Reports, Incident Reports, etc.
Work in collaboration with Electric Boat Human Resource Coordinators and SAMI administrative staff to address issues related to trainee performance, behaviors and issues as they arise Maintain records of attendance, retention, and other documents as required by the administration. Provide educational assistance to students during regularly scheduled times. Advise students as it relates to program policies, and satisfactory (or unsatisfactory) performance. Maintain communication with administrative staff and Electric Boat Human Resource Coordinators Ensure adherence to rigid safety and PPE protocols on a daily basis Ensure training labs are organized, safe and cleaned at the end of each shift Report issues related to machine/equipment maintenance and supply inventory Attend all scheduled mandatory meetings set by Program Administration Maintain professional appearance and demeanor at all times. Perform other duties as required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without, reasonable accommodation. Experience in set up, operations, maintenance and troubleshooting of various manual and CNC machine shop equipment Ability to read blueprints, manuals, specifications and knowledge of and experience with AutoCAD and Solid Works operation Proficient in the use of all manual machine tools and measurement equipment Proficient in the use of CNC machines including programming knowledge and skills Ability to determine dimensions and tolerances for finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and set-up requirements Measure, scribe and mark dimensions and reference points on material Knowledge of speeds and feeds Knowledge of safety protocols in a manufacturing environment Calculate and set controls to regulate machine functions Verify dimensions and alignments of assembly Ability to follow curricula and complete required reporting Ability to work with trainees in groups and individually Ability to deliver curricula in a variety of formats including lecture, hands-on, PowerPoint Skills and abilities to effectively manage a classroom Post-secondary education preferred Must be organized with the ability to multi-task in a high-volume work environment Must have strong communication skills with ability to communicate effectively and professionally with individuals and groups from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds from industry, community, education, and government Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately with minimal direct supervision Knowledge of the college's mission, purpose, and goals and the role of the SAMI Machine Trainer in achieving them Minimum of 5 years' work experience preferred If interested email resume to Kathy Partington at kpartington@neit.edu or Lisa Flaherty lflaherty@neit.edu at
