Job Description

Job Title:
CNC Machine Operator / Machinist Job Description This role operates and sets up CNC machines to produce high-quality parts according to engineering specifications and blueprints. You will read job specifications, program and adjust CNC equipment, perform basic maintenance, and verify part quality using precision measuring tools. The position requires strong blueprint interpretation skills, attention to detail, and comfort working in a busy manufacturing environment with multiple CNC workstations. Responsibilities Read and interpret job specifications, blueprints, and engineering drawings to determine machine adjustments, material requirements, and part metrics. Set up CNC machines, including loading programs, installing tooling, setting offsets, and preparing materials according to engineering and blueprint requirements. Utilize blueprints to set metrics in CNC controls and program machines in line with engineering metrics, including making minor program changes, saving them correctly, and verifying accuracy. Perform machine setup and changeovers, including breaking down machines and preparing them for the next job to support efficient production. Conduct routine and minor preventative maintenance on CNC machines, such as oiling machines, dies, and workpieces, and replacing basic components to keep production running smoothly. Set stops or guides to specified lengths using scales, rules, or templates to ensure accurate and repeatable part dimensions. Position workpieces against stops or align layout marks with dies or blades to prepare for machining operations. Operate CNC lathes, CNC mills, and vertical machining centers using controls such as Fanuc, Haas, Siemens, Okuma, and Mazak, as applicable to production needs. Monitor machine operation continuously to detect workpiece defects, machine malfunctions, or abnormal conditions and take corrective action or notify appropriate personnel. Measure workpiece dimensions using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision instruments to confirm accuracy and adherence to tolerances. Perform quality inspections throughout the process to ensure parts meet blueprint specifications, tolerances, and quality standards. Remove burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpieces using powered hand tools to ensure safe handling and proper part finish. Rivet and/or spot weld workpieces when required by the job specifications. Operate hoists and cranes safely to move raw materials, workpieces, and finished products throughout the shift. Stack, mark, pack, and transport finished workpieces to designated locations in an organized and safe manner. Follow all safety procedures, including the proper use of required personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean and orderly work area. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to support production goals, continuous improvement, and efficient workflow. Essential Skills 1-2 years of experience in CNC machining strongly desired, or completion of a machine tool program from a technical school or equivalent training (not maintenance-focused). Hands-on experience in CNC machining environments such as job shops or manufacturing operations involving CNC mills, CNC lathes, or related technical machine operations. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings accurately, including understanding dimensions, tolerances, and metrics (required). Proficiency using precision measuring tools, including digital micrometers and digital calipers; manual tools can be learned on the job. Familiarity with CNC controls and platforms such as Fanuc, Haas, Siemens, Okuma, and Mazak. Understanding of G-code and M-code programming and the ability to work with G & M codes for CNC operations. Experience with CNC lathes, CNC mills, and vertical machining centers in a production environment. Capability to perform basic machine setup, changeovers, and minor program edits on CNC machines. Knowledge of machining practices, grinding, tolerances, and quality inspection processes. Comfort operating hoists and cranes to move materials and finished parts safely. Ability to observe machine operation, identify defects or malfunctions, and respond appropriately. High school diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications Completion of a technical college or trade school machine tool program or equivalent training is highly valued. Previous experience in a job shop or high-mix manufacturing environment is beneficial. Work experience with quality inspection processes and documentation is a plus. Experience with rivet and spot weld operations is helpful. Ability to perform minor preventative maintenance on CNC equipment and tooling. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality parts. Willingness to work overtime and occasional Saturdays as production requires. Adaptability to learn new machines and controls as additional CNC workstations are added. Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-based production setting.
