Job Description

We are looking for an experienced CNC Lathe Machinist to join our precision machine shop. This role is for someone who enjoys producing high-quality parts in a low-volume, high-mix environment and wants to take ownership of the lathe area of the business. This is not a repetitive production role making the same part every day. We manufacture specialist precision components, continue to develop new products, and need someone who enjoys solving problems, proving out new work, improving processes, and helping build a reliable manufacturing setup for the long term. About the role You will be responsible for setting up and running quality parts on CNC lathes, proving out new programs, maintaining tooling and stock inventory, helping improve processes, and keeping the lathe and surrounding workshop area operating reliably. Most offline programming can be handled by others, but you must be confident working with the programmer to prove out programs, identify issues, make sensible edits where required, and save programs and setup information correctly so they are easy to find and repeat in the future. The ideal candidate will have strong Okuma lathe experience, including conversational programming, sub-spindle hand-offs, live tooling, and working with macros or parametric programs. Main responsibilities Your responsibilities will include: Setting up and running CNC lathe parts to a high standard Working in a low-volume, high-mix precision machining environment Proving out new programs and giving clear feedback to the programming team Making appropriate edits and adjustments at the machine where needed Using and maintaining macro programs, parametric programs, tables and lookup data Running parts from structured part tables and parametric drawings, rather than requiring a separate print for every small variation Saving programs, setup notes, offsets and process information clearly so jobs can be repeated Maintaining high standards of dimensional accuracy, surface finish and documentation Taking ownership of quality and holding yourself accountable for your work Identifying when something is not working and explaining why Helping improve product design and manufacturing methods over time Supporting and assisting trainees or less experienced staff around you Overseeing or supporting the EDM operator where needed Keeping the lathe area clean, organised and safe Equipment, maintenance and inventory We are looking for someone who takes care of the equipment provided and is proactive about maintenance to avoid downtime. You will be expected to help with: Routine lathe maintenance Keeping the workshop and machines in good working order Monitoring inserts, tooling, steel and standard consumables Reordering standard items before they run out Keeping stock and inventory information up to date Identifying tooling, workholding or process improvements Maintaining a tidy, organised and efficient work area Required experience The right candidate should have experience with: CNC lathe setup and operation Okuma lathes Conversational programming Sub-spindle hand-offs Live tooling Proving out new programs Working to tight tolerances Reading and understanding technical drawings Using precision measuring tools Working in a high-mix, low-volume environment Program organisation, setup records and repeatable processes Taking responsibility for quality and process reliability Highly useful experience The following would be a bonus: Macro programming Parametric programming Working from lookup tables or part-family systems CAM or offline programming experience Milling experience Workholding and fixture setup Touching off tools and setting up milling operations EDM experience Surface grinding or general precision finishing General mechanical maintenance Direct EDM experience is not required, but it would be a plus. What we are looking for We are looking for someone who is: Experienced, practical and hands-on Careful, accurate and quality-focused Accountable for their own work Proactive about maintenance and avoiding downtime Comfortable working with programmers and improving processes Able to explain problems clearly rather than just accepting things at face value Interested in understanding the product, not just running the machine Willing to help train and support less experienced staff Organised with tooling, programs, setup notes and inventory Motivated to become an excellent machinist Proud of producing high-quality parts Interested in helping shape the future setup of the business If you require a separate drawing for every single part variation and do not want to work with macro programs, parametric tables or structured setup systems, this is probably not the right role. However, if you enjoy understanding part families, improving repeatability and helping develop smarter manufacturing methods, this could be a very good fit. Why join us? This is an opportunity to join a growing precision manufacturing business at an early stage and help shape how the shop is set up. You will have the chance to influence tooling, workholding, process design, machine setup, inspection methods and product quality as the business develops. We are looking for someone who wants to contribute ideas, improve systems, and take pride in building a high-quality manufacturing operation over the coming years. How to apply Please send your resume and include a short note telling us: What attracts you to this role Your experience with Okuma lathes, live tooling and sub-spindle work Your experience proving out new programs Whether you have worked with macros, parametric programs or part-family tables What you would bring to the team
