Job Title:
CNC Lead Machinist Job Description This role leads and supports CNC machinists and operators on the production floor by setting up, programming, and troubleshooting CNC equipment while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality production. You will serve as a technical expert, mentor, and problem solver who keeps machines running to target, improves processes, and collaborates closely with engineering, quality, and maintenance teams. Responsibilities Lead and support CNC machinists and operators on the production floor, providing day-to-day guidance and technical direction. Set up CNC machines, including mills, lathes, or vertical machining centers (VMCs), based on departmental needs. Program CNC machines and adjust parameters to ensure parts are produced to specification. Troubleshoot CNC machines in real time to resolve machining, tooling, and quality issues. Monitor machines to ensure they run efficiently and consistently meet production targets. Optimize cycle times, tool life, and setups to drive continuous improvement in productivity and quality. Train and mentor operators on machine setups, offsets, tooling changes, and best practices. Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical drawings to ensure accurate part production. Perform first-piece inspections and verify that parts meet dimensional and quality specifications. Coordinate with engineering, quality, and maintenance teams to resolve production challenges and improve processes. Assist with scheduling work and prioritizing jobs to meet production deadlines and customer requirements. Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding machine status, production issues, and improvement opportunities. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area in accordance with OSHA and company safety standards. Essential Skills 5+ years of CNC machining experience working with mills, lathes, or both. 1-2+ years of leadership or lead-level experience in a machining environment. Strong CNC setup skills, including tooling selection, workholding, and machine offsets. Proven troubleshooting ability for machining, tooling, and quality issues. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and understand GD&T. Experience working in a production or job shop environment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality parts. Effective communication skills for collaborating with operators, supervisors, and cross-functional teams. Ability to perform first-piece inspections and verify parts against specifications. Commitment to maintaining a safe and organized work environment in line with OSHA and company standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications CNC programming experience using G-code or conversational controls. Experience with multi-axis CNC machines or complex setups. Exposure to Lean manufacturing principles or process improvement initiatives. Ability to coach and mentor less experienced operators to build team capability. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
