Metal Prep Assistant Job Description The Metal Prep Assistant supports laser cutting, machining, and press brake operations by handling raw materials, operating general metal preparation equipment, and assisting machine operators throughout the production process. This role ensures an efficient production flow by staging, moving, and organizing materials while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and housekeeping in a metal fabrication environment. Responsibilities Load and unload raw materials and finished parts from laser cutting machines in a safe and efficient manner. Assist in unloading incoming raw material trucks and store materials in designated locations according to established procedures. Operate general metal preparation machinery, including band saws, iron workers, press equipment, and plasma torches, following safety and quality guidelines. Use part drawings and blueprints as references to produce parts accurately and to specification. Assist machine operators with material handling, including staging and positioning materials for laser cutting, machining, and press brake operations. Perform operator-level maintenance on equipment, such as basic cleaning, inspection, and minor adjustments, to keep machines in proper working order. Maintain daily housekeeping standards by keeping work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards. Support production flow by staging, moving, and organizing raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished parts as directed. Use hand tools, measuring tools, and inspection equipment, such as tape measures and calipers, to verify part dimensions and quality. Assist with basic machine setup tasks under direction, contributing to efficient production and minimal downtime. Essential Skills Ability to read and interpret blueprints and part drawings. Ability to use a measuring tape and work accurately within the metric measurement system. Competency in basic shop math to perform measurements and calculations. Ability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes for safe material handling. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks in a fabrication environment. Attention to detail and comfort working around metal fabrication and machining equipment. Experience with production and machine operation in a manufacturing setting. Ability to read and follow instructions, including blueprint reading and work orders. Mechanical aptitude for working with metal fabrication tools and equipment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience operating band saws, iron workers, press equipment, and plasma torches. Experience in sheet metal fabrication and metal prep processes. Familiarity with press brake operations and machine setup. Experience using inspection tools such as calipers and other measuring devices. Comfort using hand tools and working with raw steel and fabricated parts. Flexibility to handle changing daily job assignments and shifting production priorities. Why Work Here? Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Trussville, AL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.
