Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Planer Operator to join our manufacturing team. In this vital role, you will operate and oversee planer machines used in wood processing and millwork production. Your expertise will ensure precise material preparation, high-quality finished products, and adherence to safety standards. Objectives/Summary/Purpose:
The Planerman ensures that all lumber produced in the planing process meets the WWPA requirements for dimension lumber. It is through the Planerman's efforts, and in cooperation with production and Quality Control, that will assure that lumber produced in the planing process meets the established standards of quality, recovery, and reliability.
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
The Planerman is responsible for the setup of the Planer in accordance with the dimension of lumber to be surfaced. he/she must maintain a smooth flow of lumber through the Planer to ensure steady production throughout the Planer department.
Other responsibilities include grinding:
(Planer knives, chipping knives and side heads), changing knives in the Planer, changing side heads, jointing, Planer maintenance and checking surfaced lumber sizes to ensure the surfaced lumber is within the established quality standards.
Teamwork:
Because the Planerman is responsible for the setting of lumber sizes on the Planer, it is essential that he/she work closely with Quality Control to ensure the highest lever of grade recovery. The Planerman must also work closely with the Planer Feeder to help ensure a smooth flow of lumber through the Planer.
Cleanup:
The Planerman is responsible for keeping the Planer clean in a manner that will prevent injury or downtime. He/she should also keep both the Planer room and the grinding room in clean condition.
Safety:
The safe performance of duties is an essential responsibility for this position. Compliance with the "Rules of Conduct" and safety policies is a key to achieving this goal. This position requires following BFPI lockout procedures. Staff should be familiar with safety hazards for this position and all neighboring stationary and mobile equipment and are required to follow all recommended safety procedures. Be cautious of slivers, flying wood debris, rogue lumber and communicate with teammates about potential safety hazards in the area. Safety suggestions, complaints, unsafe acts or working conditions are to be reported to the Planer Supervisor, Plant Manager, or General Manager as soon as safely possible.
Other Duties:
The responsibilities and duties described are only used as an indicator to the type of tasks that will be undertaken in the process of attaining the production needs. As more needs are identified, the duties and responsibilities will be modified to include them.
Experience:
1+ years of experience operating a planer in a sawmill or wood products facility. Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments. Knowledge of lumber grades, dimensions, and quality standards. Keen eye for detail and commitment to producing top-tier products. Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment. Dedication to safety and teamwork.
Working Conditions:
Temperature will range from -40 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, exposure to fine wood dust, noise exposure up to 95 decibels (hearing protection required), and occasional exposure to wind drafts.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires continuous standing, ability to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds and a good understanding and application of proper body mechanics.
