Job Requirements

• Maintain accurate records of saw condition, filing history, gauge readings, and rotation logs; track saw life and identify saws approaching end-of-life for timely replacement.
• Communicate proactively with the Sawmill Supervisor regarding saw performance, upcoming filing schedules, saws requiring replacement, and any quality issues that may be saw-related.
• Support the Maintenance Manager in evaluating new saw products, suppliers, and filing techniques; provide technical input on saw specifications and purchasing decisions.
• Follow all PDL safety policies and procedures at all times, including LOTO/lockout-tagout procedures before working on any saw or associated production equipment.
• Immediately report all safety incidents, near-misses, and saw-related equipment failures to the Sawmill Supervisor; never return an unsafe saw to production.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Sawmill Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED required; completion of a formal saw filing apprenticeship or equivalent vocational training strongly preferred.
• Minimum 3-5 years of saw filing experience in a sawmill, lumber, or wood products manufacturing environment required; experience with circular saws, band saws, and gang saws preferred.
• Demonstrated proficiency in saw tensioning, leveling, sharpening, and fitting to specification; ability to read and interpret gauge measurements and apply correct tooth geometry for varying species and conditions.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and precision hand skills; comfort working with grinding and filing equipment, precision measurement tools, and saw filing machinery.
• Ability to diagnose saw performance problems on the production floor and identify root cause from symptoms including drift, washboarding, burning, vibration, and surface quality issues.
• Thorough understanding of LOTO procedures and safe work practices around saws and production machinery; commitment to never returning an unsafe saw to service.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and on-call availability when production demands require emergency saw service.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Formal saw filing apprenticeship or certification through a recognized trade program or industry association.
• Experience with a variety of saw configurations including large circular head rig saws, thin-kerf saws, and carbide-tipped edger saws.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is performed primarily in the saw filing room with regular presence on the sawmill production floor to monitor saw performance and install or remove saws. The incumbent must be able to stand for extended periods, bend, reach, and lift saws and equipment up to 60 lbs. The role involves regular exposure to metal filings, grinding sparks, noise, sawdust, and sharp saw components. Cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots are required at all times when handling saws; additional PPE applies during grinding and filing operations. All LOTO procedures must be followed before working on any installed saw or production equipment.
