Job Title:
Sawyer Job Description This role operates CNC saws and related equipment to cut and drill steel beams within tight tolerances in a large structural steel fabrication facility. You will prepare and run CNC machinery, interpret blueprints and work orders, and ensure all products meet strict quality and safety standards. The position works a four-day, 10-hour shift schedule on either day or swing shift and requires strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience in industrial metal fabrication. Responsibilities Prepare and operate CNC machines, including CNC saws and CNC drills, for tasks such as cutting, drilling, grinding, and other metal fabrication operations. Run a CNC saw with a CNC drill to cut and drill steel beams while maintaining a tolerance of 1/8 inch or better. Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and work orders to understand job specifications and setup requirements. Perform material setups prior to running the machine, including selecting materials, positioning workpieces, and configuring machine parameters. Set up machines such as shears, burn tables, punch presses, press brakes, routers, drill presses, bandsaws, and plate processing equipment as required for production. Use a tape measure and other precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and ensure parts meet specified tolerances. Inspect machinery and finished products for quality assurance, identifying defects and making adjustments as needed. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and make basic adjustments or coordinate further maintenance to minimize downtime. Perform daily maintenance on machinery, including cleaning, lubrication, and routine checks to keep equipment in safe working condition. Handle materials safely and appropriately throughout the fabrication process, including loading, unloading, and staging materials. Operate overhead cranes and other material handling equipment as needed to move heavy steel components within the facility. Follow all safety requirements, procedures, and guidelines, and maintain any required certifications related to equipment operation and workplace safety. Lift up to 50 pounds regularly and maintain the physical fitness necessary to perform manual tasks in an industrial environment. Work collaboratively with other team members on the production floor to meet schedules, support complex steel fabrication projects, and maintain a clean and organized work area. Train and adapt to different shifts as needed, including initial training on day shift before transitioning to swing shift if required. Essential Skills Proven experience in saw operation in either the steel or lumber industry. Experience operating industrial CNC machines for heavy metal fabrication, such as oxy fuel cutting equipment, plasma tables, burn tables, and related machinery. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and work orders accurately. Proficiency in using a tape measure and other basic measurement tools to maintain a 1/8 inch tolerance or better. Hands-on experience working in an industrial manufacturing or fabrication environment. Capability to perform machine setup for equipment such as CNC machines, shears, burn tables, punch presses, press brakes, routers, drill presses, plate processing machines, and bandsaws. Knowledge of saw operation techniques specific to steel beams and structural components. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks safely. Strong troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve basic equipment malfunctions. Commitment to following safety requirements and maintaining any necessary operational certifications. Additional Skills & Qualifications Familiarity with overhead cranes and other material handling equipment. Experience operating oxy fuel cutting systems and burn tables for plate and structural processing. Background in structural steel or bridge fabrication environments. Comfort working with fabrication tools such as shear machines, press brakes, routers, punch presses, burn tables, and drill presses. Experience with plate processing and bandsaw operations in a production setting. Ability to interpret and work from detailed fabrication prints and schematics. Willingness to join the Ironworkers Shopmens Local 516 union after conversion to direct employment, gaining access to union-supported wages, pension, and family health plans. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in a 180,000 square foot single steel fabrication facility, one of the largest in the Pacific Northwest, dedicated to high-rise buildings, bridges, marine structures, and other structural steel projects. Work is performed on a four-day, 10-hour schedule: day shift operates Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The environment is industrial and fast-paced, involving heavy machinery such as CNC saws, CNC drills, oxy fuel and burn tables, shears, punch presses, press brakes, routers, drill presses, plate processing equipment, bandsaws, and overhead cranes. Employees regularly handle heavy steel components and must adhere to strict safety practices and appropriate industrial attire suitable for a steel fabrication shop. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tigard, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $29.00/hr.
