Job Title:
2nd Shift Machine Operator Job Description The 2nd Shift Machine Operator sets up, operates, and maintains automated production equipment in a large manufacturing environment that produces paper-based packaging. This role focuses on troubleshooting mechanical issues, performing changeovers, monitoring product quality, and ensuring safe, efficient operation of the production line during the mid-shift. Responsibilities Troubleshoot machine issues and assist with mechanical repairs, including unjamming the line, rethreading the line, and replacing worn or broken drive belts, bearings, and related components. Manage product changeovers to minimize downtime, including changing paper sizes and adjusting multiple areas of the manufacturing line to accommodate new product specifications. Perform general maintenance on machines and other production equipment to ensure consistent and reliable operation. Complete required production reports accurately and on time using basic computer applications such as Excel and Outlook. Navigate and comprehend Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems, including interpreting error codes and faults, adjusting speeds, changing programs, and making necessary operational adjustments. Learn and use web-based operating systems such as SAP, Oracle, or similar platforms to support production and reporting activities. Splice raw materials at various points in the production line when materials run out, including paper rolls, release liners, and label stock, typically every few hours. Monitor product flow through the production line to ensure consistent quality and productivity, identifying and addressing issues promptly. Maintain a safe and clean work environment by applying a basic understanding of 5S principles and following established safety practices. Operate a forklift to support production activities, with training provided as needed. Wear appropriate dress and personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times in accordance with safety and facility requirements. Perform other duties consistent with the nature of the role or as assigned by the supervisor to support overall production operations. Essential Skills Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with hand tools and mechanical components, ideally with 3+ years of experience in a mechanically focused role. Experience troubleshooting and repairing machinery, including identifying and resolving issues with drive motors, belt and pulley systems, and free-spinning and motor-driven rolls. Ability to perform and support machine operation in a production or manufacturing environment. Basic computer skills, including the ability to use Excel and Outlook to complete production reports and communicate with management. Ability to navigate and understand Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems, including reading error codes, adjusting speeds, and changing programs. Capacity to learn and work with web-based operating systems such as SAP, Oracle, or similar platforms. Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift safely in a manufacturing setting. Understanding of basic 5S principles to maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area. Capability to perform physical tasks associated with machine operation, production, and general labor in a large manufacturing environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Expereince in automotive repair, demonstrating hands-on mechanical experience and familiarity with complex mechanical systems. Experience in aviation repair, indicating a strong mechanical and technical skill set with attention to precision and safety. Experience running and repairing large-scale automation, such as assembly lines and conveyor systems. Understanding of how drive motors, belt and pulley systems, free-spinning and motor-driven rolls, and roll bearings function and how to replace them. Experience with print application processes is a plus. Experience with glue or adhesive application systems is a plus. Experience in production, assembly, general labor, packaging, mechanical assembly, or construction environments. Comfort working with hand tools and performing mechanical adjustments and repairs on production equipment. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based in a large manufacturing environment focused on producing paper-based packaging, including industrial and commercial paper bags used for building materials, food products, and e-commerce packaging. The position is assigned to the mid shift (approximately 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.), with other shifts operating during daylight and night hours. The work involves operating and maintaining automated production lines, conveyor systems, and related mechanical equipment, as well as using Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems and web-based platforms such as SAP or Oracle. Team members use forklifts and hand tools regularly and follow established safety protocols, including wearing appropriate dress and personal protective equipment (PPE).
