Bagger / Machine Operator Job Description This role plays a key part in a high-volume yeast production facility, operating bagging and packaging equipment to ensure products are accurately filled, sealed, labeled, and prepared for shipment. You will handle heavy materials, maintain strict food safety and FDA standards, and support continuous production by keeping equipment and work areas clean, organized, and safe. Responsibilities Operate and monitor packaging and bagging machinery to fill, weigh, seal, label, and palletize yeast products efficiently and accurately. Weigh bags using basic math skills to ensure correct product weight before placing them on skids or pallets. Perform visual inspections of products and packaging to verify quality, accuracy, and adherence to specifications. Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), food safety guidelines, and sanitation procedures at all times. Complete production documentation and packaging records accurately and in a timely manner. Assist with line changeovers, including adjusting equipment and preparing materials for different products or package sizes. Support basic troubleshooting of packaging equipment and escalate issues when needed to minimize downtime. Perform line sanitation tasks, including cleaning equipment and work areas to meet food safety and regulatory standards. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper handling and storage of materials and tools. Communicate promptly with supervision about any issues related to product quality, equipment performance, or safety concerns. Comply with all safety requirements, including wearing protective shoes and using provided personal protective equipment such as lab coats, hair nets or beard nets, ear plugs, and safety glasses. Lift and move 50 lb bags repeatedly throughout the shift and manage other physically demanding tasks as needed. Stand for extended periods in a hot environment and adapt to working in packaging rooms or coolers as production requires. Demonstrate willingness to be trained and certified on forklift operation for future responsibilities if converted to a permanent role. Essential Skills Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lb bags and perform heavy lifting and palletizing throughout the shift. Ability to stand on feet for most of the shift, including in a hot work environment. Previous experience in a food and beverage manufacturing environment. Previous experience working in an FDA-regulated environment or equivalent. Understanding and adherence to FDA regulations, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and food safety requirements. Basic mathematical skills to accurately weigh bags and verify correct product weight. Ability to operate equipment as a machine or packaging operator in a production setting. Comfort working in general production and general labor roles, including packing and loading tasks. Willingness and ability to be trained and certified on forklift operation for future responsibilities. Ability to comply with strict food safety and quality rules, including shaving (with allowance for a goatee), removal of jewelry and piercings that cannot be removed, and adherence to grooming standards for respirator use. Ownership of protective shoes with steel or composite toes, as they are required for this role. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience as a packaging operator, machine operator, loader, or packager in a manufacturing environment. Familiarity with completing production documentation and packaging records accurately. Experience assisting with equipment changeovers and basic troubleshooting on production lines. Ability to maintain focus and productivity in environments with strong odors, such as yeast and sour smells. Comfort working in coolers or packaging rooms maintained at approximately 50 degrees year-round. Attention to detail to ensure packaging accuracy and compliance with food safety standards. Strong communication skills to report quality, equipment, or safety issues promptly to supervision. Reliability and consistency in following safety protocols, including wearing PPE and adhering to facility rules regarding jewelry, nails, lashes, and other items restricted in FDA-regulated environments. Work Environment This position operates in an FDA-regulated food manufacturing facility that produces yeast products. You will typically work 12-hour shifts on either 1st shift (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) or 2nd shift (7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.), with the greatest need on 2nd shift. The schedule generally follows a 3-on, 3-off pattern and does not rotate. Work may take place in various packaging rooms and coolers maintained at approximately 50 degrees year-round, with a damp atmosphere and strong sour yeast odors throughout the facility. At times, the job requires working in hot environments and wearing full uniforms as necessary. This is a physically demanding role that involves heavy lifting, palletizing, and standing for most of the shift. The facility enforces strict FDA and food safety rules, including no jewelry, artificial nails, false lashes, or similar items. Dress and PPE requirements include steel or composite toe protective shoes (provided by the employee), as well as hair nets or beard nets, lab coats, ear plugs, and safety glasses supplied on site. Employees must comply with grooming standards, including facial hair and jewelry restrictions, to maintain food safety and respirator compliance. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Memphis, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.50 - $18.50/hr.
