Milling Machine Operator Job Description The Milling Machine Operator monitors and operates milling equipment to process raw wheat into finished products that meet precise customer specifications and quality standards. This role supports shift leadership by overseeing ingredients, formulations, and processing procedures, conducting laboratory analyses, and assisting with finished product transfers. The operator ensures equipment runs smoothly, performs routine maintenance, and maintains a clean, safe, and compliant production environment. Responsibilities Identify different varieties of wheat and produce all products to the customer's specifications during each shift. Monitor milling equipment operations continuously to ensure smooth performance and promptly detect and correct any malfunctions. Identify issues in the mills and assist with resolving problems, including supporting maintenance activities on milling equipment. Perform inspections and preventive maintenance on sifters, purifiers, and other milling equipment to maintain reliable operation. Examine products regularly to verify conformance to established quality standards and adjust processes as needed. Clean work areas and equipment thoroughly, including cleaning and lubricating machinery to maintain safe and efficient operations. Confirm that products have the correct mix and are weighed according to specific customer requirements. Ensure finished products are transferred to load-out on schedule and within customer specifications. Perform basic maintenance on all cleaning house equipment to support consistent production flow. Assist in the repair of mill equipment, with particular focus on sifters and purifiers, as directed by maintenance or shift leadership. Keep ingredient feeders full at all times and ensure wheat flow to the mill remains uninterrupted unless instructed otherwise by the miller on shift. Blend finished product per customer specifications and transfer to load-out, depending on location requirements. Conduct laboratory analyses accurately, precisely, and on time using approved methods, recording results and verifying their accuracy. Follow prescribed test procedures and sample handling protocols to maintain data integrity and product quality. Use computer systems to track production, monitor equipment, and document test results and process data. Operate measuring tools and laboratory equipment to support production and quality control activities. Monitor equipment readings and performance indicators to ensure safe and efficient operation. Work collaboratively with team members to support overall plant performance and meet production goals. Perform other related duties as requested to support production, quality, and maintenance activities. Essential Skills High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills. Thorough knowledge of mill equipment and basic maintenance needs. Knowledge of different wheat varieties and their use in milling processes. Knowledge of grain science and analytical procedures related to milling and quality control. Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot production problems. Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications. Ability and willingness to work with wheat products, with no wheat or gluten sensitivity. Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team environment. Experience with production and machine operation in an industrial or manufacturing setting. Ability to set up and operate machines safely and efficiently. Skill in using measuring tools and laboratory equipment for quality checks. Competence in computer operation for monitoring equipment and recording data. Experience in monitoring equipment and machine operating in a quality-focused environment. Experience in inspection, quality control, and maintenance repairs. Ability to work in a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) environment. Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a rotating shift schedule. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a milling, grain, or food processing facility. Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices on industrial equipment. Comfort working with rotating 12-hour shifts, including days and nights. Ability to interpret and follow detailed process instructions and customer specifications. Experience using laboratory methods for product testing and analysis. Attention to detail when recording and verifying laboratory and production data. Work Environment The role operates primarily within a milling laboratory and production environment, where the employee monitors milling machines, product levels, and load-outs. Work involves a mix of seated tasks in the lab, such as tracking load-outs and conducting tests, and time spent on the production floor cleaning machines, changing fans, and performing basic maintenance. The position follows a rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts, with day shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and night shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The rotation typically consists of four days on and four days off, followed by four nights on and four days off, then returning to day shift. The environment includes operating and monitoring industrial milling equipment, working around moving machinery, and adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices. Company-provided uniforms and personal protective equipment, including safety boots and safety prescription glasses, support a safety-focused and professional work setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winchester, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.26 - $25.26/hr.
