Job Description

About Urban Accessories Urban Accessories designs and manufactures high quality and design-forward architectural castings and site furnishings. Since 1972, we have been working with clients to create bespoke solutions for landscape and architectural projects of all sizes. Operating from approximately 60,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Tacoma, Washington, our team of roughly 50 employees designs, casts, fabricates, finishes, and ships architectural products for projects across North America. We are a make-to-order manufacturer with a mix of standard products and custom project work. The Role We are adding a second Laser Cutter Operator to complete a two-person tandem model: one operator programs the next job in TruTops Boost while the other runs the machine, so the laser cuts continuously. Both operators are fully capable in both roles and rotate between them. This is equal parts programming and machine operation. You will work from a complete shop drawing package (DXF, flat pattern, BOM, cut list, bend sequence sheet) produced by our detailer from a 3D CAD model, with part numbers embedded in the DXF for automatic laser etching during cutting. The documentation is the source of truth; using it precisely is fundamental to quality here. Responsibilities Review incoming DXF files for laser-specific
DFM:
geometry integrity, hole-to-edge clearances, slot widths, and correct MARK layer placement for part number etching. Program nesting jobs in
TruTops Boost:
material and parameter setup, part nesting optimized for both material yield and downstream press brake sequencing, NC program generation. Operate the Trumpf TruLaser fiber cutter: sheet setup, first-article inspection, in-process quality monitoring, preventive maintenance. Sort cut parts by job using etched part numbers; manage WIP flow to the press brake within defined cart limits. Assist with manual press brake setup using the bend sequence sheet from the job package; familiarity with or willingness to learn Praxis or similar offline press brake programming software. Maintain accurate job travelers and update job status in Fulcrum throughout the shift. Required Qualifications 2 or more years of hands-on CNC fiber laser operation in a metal fabrication environment (Trumpf, Amada, Bystronic, Mazak, or equivalent). Demonstrated experience with nesting software. TruTops Boost strongly preferred; SigmaNEST, Lantek, Bysoft, or Amada AP100 accepted with cross-training provided. Ability to read mechanical drawings and DXF files: flat patterns, BOM balloon callouts, bend lines, basic GD&T. Working knowledge of sheet metal properties for mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum: gauge conversions, minimum bend radius, grain direction.
Proficiency with precision measurement tools:
digital calipers, squares, protractors. High school diploma or GED; technical or vocational manufacturing training is a plus. Preferred Qualifications Direct Trumpf TruLaser experience with TruTops Boost and TecZone Cut. Understanding of the
DXF MARK/ETCH
layer convention for laser part identification. Press brake setup experience and familiarity with Praxis or similar offline press brake programming software.
Experience reading SolidWorks-generated drawing packages:
BOM tables, cut lists, exploded assembly views. High-mix, low-volume job shop background with frequent changeovers. Forklift certification or willingness to obtain.
Work Environment Shop setting:
metal dust, filtered laser exhaust, noise, heat. PPE required (safety glasses, steel-toed boots, hearing protection). Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; standing and walking throughout the shift. Full-time on-site, Tacoma, WA. Shift TBD to support continuous two-operator coverage. How to Apply Apply in Indeed or send your resume to careers@urbanaccessories.com with the subject line "Laser Operator / CAD Programmer -- [Your Name]." Include a short note describing how you approach nesting on a high-mix day: how you balance material yield against delivery priority. We will train the right candidate on TruTops Boost specifics; strong nesting fundamentals on any platform are the foundation we are looking for.
