Engineering Technician Job Description The Engineering Technician supports the development and production of medical devices by testing and troubleshooting electrical assemblies, building cartridges and kit components, and maintaining process equipment and laboratory tools. This role plays a key part in ensuring that instruments and consumables used in medical testing meet quality standards and perform reliably, directly contributing to products that impact patients across the nation. Responsibilities

+ Operate and troubleshoot laser welder

+ Test and troubleshoot electromechanical assemblies, including board population and related components.

+ Build medical device cartridges and kit components according to established procedures and specifications.

+ Handle chemicals safely and perform routine maintenance on process equipment.

+ Operate laboratory instruments and equipment used in testing, assembly, and inspection activities.

+ Organize and maintain the floor area, tools, and supplies required for daily work to ensure efficient operations.

+ Maintain a safe work environment with respect to chemicals, equipment, and laboratory practices.

+ Support assembly and testing of instruments and consumables used in medical device applications.

+ Perform basic quality control checks on assemblies and components to verify conformance to requirements.

+ Assist with instrumentation maintenance, including electromechanical builds and PCB-related hardware.

+ Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and R D teams to support end-to-end product development and testing activities.

+ Follow documented procedures and work instructions for cleanroom assembly, inspection, and welding operations.

+ Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying issues during testing or assembly and communicating findings to the appropriate teams. Essential Skills

+ Experience testing and troubleshooting electromechanical assemblies and related hardware.

+ Experience building sub-assemblies for instruments, cartridges, or similar devices.

+ Hands-on experience working with electrical hardware such as PCB assemblies.

+ Experience with electromechanical builds and instrumentation maintenance.

+ Ability to operate laboratory equipment and tools safely and accurately.

+ Strong attention to detail when performing testing, assembly, and inspection tasks.

+ Ability to follow written procedures and work instructions in a regulated environment.

+ Comfort with chemical handling and basic understanding of safe laboratory practices.

+ Organizational skills to maintain a clean, efficient work area and manage supplies. Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Manufacturing background, ideally in consumables, instruments, or electronics.

+ Quality control or QC experience in a production or laboratory environment.

+ Laser welding experience or exposure to welding processes in manufacturing.

+ Experience working in R D or product development settings for medical devices or tests.

+ Familiarity with inspection equipment and typical manufacturing tools used in cleanroom environments.

+ Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and build strong working relationships.

+ Interest in work that directly impacts patients and contributes to meaningful healthcare outcomes. Work Environment The role is based within a service organization that supports end-to-end product development for medical devices and diagnostic tests, including both product design and clinical trial support. The work is split between a cleanroom assembly area and a workshop environment. Approximately 50% of the time is spent in a cleanroom assembly area that uses typical manufacturing and inspection equipment, welders, and other tools for assembling and inspecting cartridges and components. The other 50% of the time is spent in a workshop area that houses laser cutters, 3D printers, and related prototyping equipment. There is also a warehouse testing area where a minimal portion of time is spent performing testing activities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carlsbad, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
