Job Title:
Console Technician - Medical Device Manufacturing Job Description This role focuses on assembling, programming, and testing complex electro-mechanical, opto-mechanical, and optical sub-assemblies used in advanced medical laser console systems. You will work within a regulated manufacturing environment to build high-quality medical devices, perform detailed diagnostics, and collaborate closely with engineering to ensure reliable, safe, and compliant products. Responsibilities Assemble and integrate precision electro-mechanical, opto-mechanical, and optical components into medical laser consoles by following detailed work instructions, drawings, and procedures. Program embedded hardware and software systems and configure firmware or system settings required for proper console operation. Conduct functional and diagnostic testing of sub-assemblies and final console systems using custom test fixtures, specialized instrumentation, and standard test equipment. Document test results, assembly work performed, and any non-conformances accurately in manufacturing records, electronic databases, and ERP systems. Troubleshoot issues arising during assembly or test processes, identify root causes, and work cross-functionally with engineering and other teams to implement effective resolutions. Ensure strict compliance with safety procedures, laser safety guidelines, ESD controls, cleanroom protocols, and applicable quality system regulations such as GMP and ISO standards. Support ongoing process improvement initiatives, including 5S activities and lean manufacturing practices, to enhance efficiency, quality, and workflow. Handle optical components such as lenses, filters, mirrors, and beam paths with care, ensuring proper alignment and cleanliness during assembly and test. Use oscilloscopes, multimeters, optical power meters, and alignment tools to verify performance, calibrate systems, and diagnose issues at the component and system level. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while adhering to all manufacturing and quality documentation requirements. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment assembling and testing complex electronic or electro-mechanical sub-systems for Technician 1 roles. At least 3 years of testing experience, ideally 5 years, with complex systems for Technician 2 roles. Hands-on experience with electronic assembly and basic testing at the sub-assembly level. Proficiency with basic hand tools and mechanical assembly techniques, supported by strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools and mechanical systems. Ability to perform functional and diagnostic testing using standard test equipment and custom test fixtures. Experience with assembling optical systems, including lenses, filters, mirrors, and beam paths, and understanding of laser safety principles. Familiarity with ERP systems and electronic manufacturing documentation for recording work and test results. Knowledge of ESD procedures and cleanroom protocols in a regulated manufacturing environment. Proficiency with oscilloscopes, multimeters, optical power meters, and optical alignment tools, particularly for more advanced testing roles. Ability to diagnose electronic, optical, mechanical, and software issues down to the component level for higher-level technician roles. Excellent attention to detail and a strong quality mindset, with disciplined documentation practices. Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and documenting work clearly. Ability to sit, stand, and use fine motor skills for extended periods during assembly and testing tasks. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally as part of handling equipment, components, and assemblies. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in medical device manufacturing or other highly regulated industries with GMP and ISO quality system regulations. interest in optics, lasers, and opto-mechanical systems, with willingness to be trained further on optical technologies. Experience calibrating and testing systems and performing higher-level troubleshooting beyond basic pass/fail testing. Demonstrated ability to diagnose issues at the component level across electronic, optical, mechanical, and software domains. Proven ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment. Comfort working with precision components and following detailed technical documentation and work instructions. Prior experience in maintenance, automotive work, or similar hands-on mechanical roles that demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based in a medical device manufacturing facility focused on building and testing advanced laser console systems. All openings are on the first shift, typically running from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with flexibility to start as late as 7:30 a.m. Overtime requirements are minimal. You will work at a combination of workbenches, test stations, and clean or controlled environments, following ESD and cleanroom protocols where required. The role involves frequent use of hand tools, precision assembly equipment, custom test fixtures, oscilloscopes, multimeters, optical power meters, and alignment tools. Work includes periods of sitting and standing, performing fine motor tasks, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. The overall environment is structured, safety-focused, and quality-driven, with organized workspaces that support 5S and lean manufacturing practices. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carlsbad, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.32 - $33.28/hr.
