Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Plastic Injection Mold Toolmaker to build, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex plastic injection molds within a precision manufacturing and moldmaking environment. The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on toolroom experience, a deep understanding of mold construction and injection molding processes, and the ability to consistently produce work to exacting quality standards.

Key ResponsibilitiesDisassemble, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, modify, and reassemble complex plastic injection molds, including multi-component molds, cavities, cores, slides, lifters, ejector systems, and other mold mechanisms.

Diagnose molding and tooling issues, identify root causes of defects or mechanical failures, and recommend or implement appropriate repairs and improvements.

Perform mold fitting, spotting, polishing, alignment, adjustment, and bench work to ensure proper operation, part quality, and repeatable production performance.

Build, modify, and repair mold components according to blueprints, engineering drawings, work orders, samples, and established tooling standards.

Operate manual toolroom equipment, including surface grinders, Bridgeport-style milling machines, drill presses, saws, polishing equipment, and other conventional machining equipment.

Perform precision grinding, milling, fitting, and hand-finishing operations while maintaining tight tolerances, including tolerances as close as ±0.0002 inch.

Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, CAD-based documentation, GD&T, work orders, and mold-component specifications.

Understand tolerance stack-up and evaluate how component dimensions, clearances, fits, and alignment affect mold performance and finished-part quality.

Inspect mold components and completed work using dial indicators, micrometers, depth gauges, gauge blocks, calipers, height gauges, pin gauges, and optical comparators/shadowgraphs.

Document repairs, maintenance activities, dimensional results, and tooling modifications in accordance with internal quality and maintenance procedures.

Collaborate with engineering, molding, quality, machining, and production teams to resolve mold-performance issues and support process improvements.

Maintain organized toolroom practices and follow all safety, quality, and preventative-maintenance procedures.

QualificationsMinimum of five years of hands-on experience as a moldmaker, toolmaker, mold repair technician, or similar professional in a plastic injection molding or precision tooling environment.

Strong working knowledge of plastic injection mold design, construction, components, mechanisms, and molding-process fundamentals.

Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild complex plastic injection molds.

Proficiency operating manual toolroom machinery, particularly manual surface grinders and Bridgeport-style vertical milling machines.

Ability to consistently work to close tolerances, including ±0.0002 inch, with a thorough understanding of tolerance stack-up, fits, and clearances.

Proficient in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, engineering drawings, work orders, and GD&T requirements.

Experience using precision inspection tools, including indicators, micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, gauge blocks, and shadowgraphs/optical comparators.

Experience with CNC milling, wire EDM, and/or sinker EDM is preferred.

Strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting ability, attention to detail, and commitment to high-quality workmanship.

Ability to work independently, prioritize repairs and build work effectively, and collaborate with cross-functional manufacturing teams.
