JOB PROFILE GRINDER OPERATOR
Working location: Torrington, Connecticut, USA General Description This employee will operate a grinder in order to meet customer specifications on the product. Union, Hourly position.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Major responsibilities are listed but not necessarily limited to the following duties:
  • Operating grinding machine (30" wheel). Select grinding wheels (30" dia.) according to knowledge of metal properties and abrasives.
  • Grind roll up to 2,000mm dia., 14,000mm length.
  • Organize, plan and prioritize work.
  • Read work order and production schedules to determine specifications.
  • Perform wheel changes.
  • Mount wheels to hub.
  • Make roll measurements and roll track measurements.
  • Maintain close tolerance (microns).
  • Use and maintain a variety of precision measuring / inspection equipment.
  • Check roll diameters.
  • Make hardness and smoothness checks.
  • Remove dummy heads.
  • Select drivers and shoes for job.
  • Perform daily machine/equipment maintenance including routine oil and filter changes and greasing machine and maintain equipment service records.
  • Attention to detail and good work ethic.
  • Complete daily paperwork.
  • Follow good housekeeping practice, keep area clean and organized.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Seeking a grinder with at least 3 - 5 years' of manual machining experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and use tape measures, calipers and micrometers, including metric measurements.
  • Familiarity with: run out, taper, surface finish, tolerance and blueprint reading.
  • Computer skills required for communication and work creation purposes.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and mechanical experience with good working knowledge and experience with powered hand tools.
  • Some knowledge of hydraulics helpful.
  • Experience using lift trucks and overhead cranes desired.
  • Must be able to lift 50-60 lbs. and work up to 12 hour shift on concrete floor.
  • Ability to train for operation of all machines.
