Position:
Roll Shop Operator Overview We are presently looking for top talent to join our diverse organization. This position will exhibit process improvements that impact the bottom line in a performance driven organization. It is essential that you are transparent and lead in a collaborative way. Duties & Responsibilities In collaboration with the Roll Shop Team Leader, the Roll Shop Operator sets up, operates, maintains, and monitors the grinding of work rolls and back up rolls for the cold rolling mill and temper mill operations.
Specific duties include:
Operations/Quality Reading roll schedules, production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences and roll requirements. Positioning work rolls and back up rolls on the grinding machines using crane, chain hoists or grabs. Monitoring process information while the product is being ground to ensure that the product achieves the desired surface finish. Recording data form the operator screen for Quality Assurance purposes to ensure that the rolls have attained specifications. Adjusting controls to maintain grinding quality, utilizing output form operator control screens. Moving controls to adjust grinding speed, traverse speed and coolant flow to achieve the required roll surface finish without defects. Changing and setting up new grinding wheels or changing grinding wheels depending on the type of finish required on the roll schedule. Repairing, replacing, and maintaining grinding equipment as needed, using hand tools. Placing finished rolls in the appropriate storage racks, using crane, chain hoists or grabs, or signaling crane operators to transport them to subsequent stations. Examining finished rolls to ensure that the rolls conform to specifications, utilizing knowledge of grinding and placing any suspect rolls on hold for quality control/inspection. Testing finished work rolls and back up rolls for hardness, concentricity, surface defects and roughness, using testing equipment. Applying anti-corrosion protection to finished rolls. Printing and attaching identification tags on finished rolls for transfer to the correct cost center and for tracking purposes. Recording details or roll ID's, diameter, crown, surface measurements and marking the rolls accordingly. Identifying rolls using standard system for tracking to ensure that rolls are specific to cost centers. Preparing the rolls for transport to the cold rolling/temper mills. Transporting the rolls to the cold rolling/temper mill stocking areas. Undertaking bearing maintenance, rotation, and lubrication as per bearing maintenance schedule. Undertaking chock maintenance, rotation, and lubrication as per chock maintenance schedule. Receiving inspection of new rolls, ensuring new rolls conform to specifications and are free from defects. Preparing rolls for external processing (EDT and Chrome Plating), packing the rolls, accordingly, loading and unloading trucks. Inspecting returned rolls from external processing, checking that rolls conform to specifications. Monitoring cooling lubricant concentration, pH and the nitrite ion (weekly), bacteria/fungi (monthly), determined by standard tests. Recording the coolant test results, inputting data into the roll shop computer system. Reporting maintenance job orders, as necessary. Instructing new workers in roll grinding operations. The fulfillment of duties involves regular communication with co-workers in the annealing and rolling departments to make decisions concerning production and quality requirements.
