Job Description

Since 1973, Taber Extrusions has been a leading manufacturer of aluminum extrusion-based products for OEMs in markets ranging from Military, Department of Defense, Aircraft/Aerospace, Marine/Shipbuilder, Boat Docks, Platforms, Decking, Motor Housing, Electronics, Heat Sinks, Automotive, Rail, and Structural Components. Taber is headquartered in Russellville, Arkansas and operates two manufacturing sites in Russellville and one manufacturing site located in Gulfport, Mississippi. The Company is segmented into five operating units; Extrusion, Cast House, Fabrication, Friction Stir Welding and Micro Extrusion. Taber has continued to make ongoing investments in their value-added capabilities by recently expanding their Russellville facility to house their new friction stir welder and new state-of-the-ton press with 16" container designed for larger, complex profiles with tighter tolerances for aerospace, defense, and heavy industrial customers. Job Summary The Mold Tooling Technician is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and preparation of molds, hot tops, stool caps, bottom blocks, and associated tooling used in Direct Chill (DC) billet and slab casting. This role ensures tooling integrity, dimensional accuracy, and readiness to support safe, efficient, and high-quality casting operations. Duties and Responsibilities. Inspect molds, hot tops, stools/bottom blocks, and related casting equipment for wear, damage, and dimensional accuracy. Clean, prepare, and assemble molds and hot tops prior to casting (including coatings, liners, and insulation materials as required). Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on molds and tooling (e.g., grinding, polishing, sealing surfaces, replacing components). Ensure correct tooling is ready and staged per casting schedule. Maintain and track tooling component inventory, including identification, usage cycles, and repair history. Work closely with casting operators to troubleshoot quality issues (e.g., surface defects, drag marks, bleed-outs) related to tooling conditions. Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for casting defects or equipment issues. Ensure water and oil distribution components (rings, nozzles, hoses, injectors) are clean, functional, and properly installed. Assist with alignment and setup of casting stations as needed. Follow all safety procedures related to molten metal, water systems, and heavy equipment. Maintain housekeeping and organization of tooling and mold storage areas. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED. 2+ years of experience in aluminum casting, industrial maintenance, or similar manufacturing environment. Intermediate mechanical aptitude (use of hand tools, measurement tools, grinding equipment). Ability to read and interpret basic drawings or specifications.
Preferred:
Experience with Direct Chill (DC) billet or slab casting. Knowledge of aluminum alloys and casting behavior (e.g., 6xxx series sensitivity to surface and internal defects). Experience with refractory materials, coatings, or mold liners. Forklift and/or overhead crane experience.
