The Chief Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for overseeing the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of SASM's wastewater treatment facilities while supporting regulatory compliance and effective plant performance. The successful candidate will join an experienced team and play a central role in day-to-day operations, process control, and the continued success of the treatment plant. SASM operates a wastewater treatment plant with a 3.2 MGD dry-weather design flow utilizing trickling filters for secondary treatment.

ABOUT THE AGENCY

The Sewerage Agency of Southern Marin (SASM) is a joint powers authority (JPA) providing wastewater collection, treatment, water reclamation, and disposal services for approximately 30,000 residents of Southern Marin. The City of Mill Valley, a member of the JPA, provides staffing for SASM. Employees are hired by the City of Mill Valley and work within the Department of Public Works. SASM is located along the waterfront in Mill Valley, offering convenient access to Highway 101, San Francisco, nearby nature preserves, and some of the Bay Area's most iconic recreational areas. ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general direction, the Chief Treatment Plant Operator manages and supervises the operations team and oversees the daily operation and performance of the wastewater treatment plant and related facilities. The incumbent is responsible for process control and operational adjustments, coordinating maintenance and repair needs, ensuring reliable equipment operation, and maintaining compliance with applicable laws, regulations, permit requirements, and agency policies. Examples of Essential Duties include but are not limited to: Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of the plant operations team. Oversees plant processes and directs appropriate operational adjustments to maintain effective treatment and regulatory compliance. Ensures plant operations comply with applicable laws, regulations, permits, and agency policies. Coordinates with maintenance staff to support the reliable operation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment and facilities. Participates as a member of the agency's senior management team and provides operational input on staffing, contracting, budgeting, planning, and other agency priorities. Acts on behalf of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Director as assigned. Please note that the Job Description is currently under review. Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will a be a manager of the highest caliber, with in-depth knowledge and experience in wastewater treatment plant operations. They should be comfortable in various scenarios ranging from representing the agency to the board of directors to rolling up their sleeves to respond to an alarm after hours. The incumbent will have an impeccable safety record, and have a successful track record training and mentoring others.

Recommended experience and training include:

Five (5) years or more of experience in wastewater treatment plant operation, maintenance, and repair; including at least two (2) years of supervisory experience. High school education or equivalent Possession of a Grade IV Certification (or higher) for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Other requirements: Must be willing to work non-traditional hours, be placed in on-call status, and/or called out for emergency work at night, on weekends, or holidays.
