Plant Operator Job Description Join our team in New Haven as a Plant Operator, where you will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and controlling process equipment, as well as performing mechanical maintenance throughout the water pollution control plant. This role involves working closely with experienced operators to become proficient in all departments within the facility. Responsibilities Inspect, maintain, and control process equipment. Perform mechanical maintenance throughout the water pollution control plant. Grease equipment, change belts, and perform oil changes in gearboxes. Handle receipt of supply shipments. Maintain records of plant operations, including hourly operating data, plant violations, and abnormal operating conditions. Perform fire guard duty and confined space watch. Ensure safe, clean, and efficient operation of the facility through general work assignments such as sweeping, shoveling, and other housekeeping activities. Essential Skills Mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience in construction, cars, or mechanical work. Reliable vehicle for transportation. Ability to work varying shifts, including overtime, holidays, on-call duty, and emergency call-ins. Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills, including reading a tape measure and using hand tools. Additional Skills & Qualifications Ability to read and comprehend instructional manuals, technical data, work orders, and mechanical drawings in English. Capability to perform duties at heights up to 20 ft. Proficiency in using industrial forklifts/man lifts and operating hand and power tools. Work Environment The plant operates 24/7, with shifts divided between six operators. Candidates will initially work the 2nd shift (3PM-11PM) or 3rd shift (11PM-7AM) and can later earn spots on the 1st shift. The schedule runs in a 6-week block, working 4 days on, 2 days off. Dress code includes work pants/jeans and t-shirts, with steel-toed work boots required. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Haven, CT. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.04 - $24.04/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
