Job Description

This is skilled work in operating and maintaining a municipal potable water treatment plant. This position requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as the treatment processes are operated on a continuous basis. Work involves responsibility for the care and efficient operation of the water treatment plant during an assigned shift. Work includes covering a working area which contains several operating units of the water treatment system. Employees in this class normally work independently. Work is reviewed by a supervisor who checks records and makes daily inspections through the plant to check the condition and upkeep of equipment.
Depending on licenses and experience:
Operator II $24.24 License C Operator III $27.75 License B Operator IV $28.12 License A
  • Provides safe, aesthetically pleasing drinking water to system customers in strict accordance with Federal, State, and local Health Department regulations.
  • Inspects motors, bearing, and gear boxes for overheating and proper lubrication.
  • Collects samples of water at various stages of processing, performs lab tests on same, and records data collected.
  • Maintains equipment, process tanks, buildings, and grounds in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs mathematical calculations on collected data; calibrates process control equipment; enters collected data into computer database.
  • Assist in interact with customers with water quality concerns
  • Monitors and/or inspects numerous process control parameters for proper operation.
  • Works in confined spaces or hazardous areas.
  • Lifts medium - heavy objects and climbs ladders and stairs.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Assists in monitoring Plant SCADA system
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy
  • Position is designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Assist in training new staff.
  • Knowledge of normal operating principles of water treatment processes.
  • Ability to perform basic laboratory analysis of water.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices applied to the operation and light maintenance of pumps and similar machinery.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards, precautions, and the promotion of safety.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in a water plant.
  • Ability to efficiently and safely operate all equipment and machinery used in water plant operations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems of various water treatment processes and equipment.
  • Ability to learn basic computer skills necessary to operate various computer-controlled systems.
  • Ability to prepare written and oral reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working, harmonious relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public.
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma from an accredited school or its equivalent, supplemented by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Agency approved courses in water plant operation processes; Must have 2080 working hours of water plant operation experience; An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
  • Valid Florida Driver's License required
  • Must possess and maintain a state of Florida Class "C" Water Plant Operator certification or higher

Essential Physical Skills:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Requires work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 60 pounds of force on a recurring basis.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of taste, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.

  • Required to use written and oral communication skills
  • Read and interpret data, information and documents
  • Work under deadlines with constant interruptions

The job risks exposure to chemical, biological, electrical, and mechanical hazards. The employee will be required to work in noise, heights, bright/dim light, and adverse weather conditions. Frequent exposure to the general hazards of the industrial working environment and construction sites are also possible.
