Water Plant Operator Trainee

Performs skilled work in the operation of all water treatment plant equipment and facilities on an assigned shift. Performs related work as required. Employees in this class are being trained in the operation of water treatment machinery such as High service pumps, filters and chemical feeders used in the treatment of water. The proper operation and regulation of these equipment's is vital to the water purification process. Duties include the taking of samples for laboratory analysis and the recording of meter readings at regular intervals. Work is supervised by a supervisor or a licensed operator through inspection and by observing the effectiveness of plant operation through analysis of shift reports and chemical laboratory tests.

• Assist with maintenance work in the water plant and its surroundings.
• According to prescribed instructions, regulates the proper flow of chlorine and other water treatments chemicals.
• Transfers chemical from storage to feeder hopper.
• Check chlorine tanks and checks for residual chlorine.
• Operates water filters.
• Maintains proper water level.
• Washes filters when necessary.
• Maintains proper water levels in the storage tanks, sludge reservoir, and underground reservoir by operating pumps and opening and closing valves.
• Takes water samples for chemical analysis.
• Checks samples for clearness of settled water.
• Makes routine chemical tests for water samples.
• Checks and lubricates pumps, motors and other plant equipment.
• Bring any mechanical defects to the attention of the supervisor.
• Assist with the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment.
• Performs general custodial work in keeping plant clean and orderly.
• Performs painting of plant facilities and equipment.
• Utilizes ladder, hand tools and wrenched to perform certain duties.
• Performs clerical work which includes data entry using a computer.
• Required to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Receive resident calls document and forward to the proper departments.
• Utilizes ladder, Ph meter, chlorine test kits wrenches and other hand tools.
• Operates a computer and calculator, fax machine, as well as equipment developed or advanced from future technology as required by the job.
• Operates trucks and heavy motorized equipment.
• May conduct work outdoors under varying weather conditions.

High school graduation or equivalent plus some experience as a semi-skilled laborer in maintenance work. Must possess a Florida Drinking Water class C license or must have passed the Florida drinking water class C exam. Must successfully pass a basic assessment exam with a minimum score of 70%. Possession of a valid Florida commercial driver's license, "Class B" or higher with "N" Tank Endorsement within 9 months.

• Good knowledge of the functions and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery.
• Good knowledge of the processes involved in the purification of water including some knowledge of chemistry.
• Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects.
• Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operation.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to operate Word, and Excel.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Physical ability to perform assigned duties.
