POSITION PURPOSE
In a training capacity, will learn to coordinate and direct the switching and operations of the TVA power system and associated interconnected transmission system. Evaluates, coordinates, and directs all switching operations to take transmission facilities out of service for maintenance and to return those facilities to service. Restores electrical power to our customers following a disturbance and coordinates those activities with our power distributors. Coordinates communications with our power distributors during high load periods when loads might have to be curtailed. Provides regulatory surveillance of the adequacy of the TVA power system to provide safe shutdown of nuclear facilities in the event of a loss of coolant accident.
JOB DIMENSIONS
: Supervisory Responsibility — None. Budget Responsibility — None.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Applicable knowledge of power system protective relaying, carrier relaying, transfer trip, differential relaying, voltage control, and reactive power for the TVA Power System. Responsible to ensure TVA clearance procedure is followed to provide a safe work environment. Monitors system conditions to ensure the availability of off-site electrical power supply to nuclear plants. Responsible for complying with NERC standards. Learned competencies lead to standing shift•six months probationary. Coordinates and directs work with all TVA personnel, Corps of Engineers, power distributors, direct served customers and neighboring utilities. Responsible for maintaining records of system data, system conditions, switching instructions, personnel arrival and departure from TVA substations and test performed. During normal and emergency conditions, has the authority to take or direct timely and appropriate real-time actions. Such actions shall include shedding of firm load to prevent or alleviate SOL and IROL violations. These actions are performed without obtaining approval from higher level personnel within the Transmission Operator or Balancing Authority. Ensures the safe and reliable real-time operation of the TVA transmission system and to ensure the connectivity of the BES by monitoring the operating limits, developing contingency plans and directing switching operations. Testing and Examination Employee will be given classroom training for 6 weeks with weekly exams. Employee failing to pass any of the examinations or failing to maintain an average of 80 or above on weekly examinations, will be on remedial for two weeks, and then given a second opportunity to pass the examination or raise their weekly average to 80 or above. Failing to raise their average to 80 or above, the student will be eliminated from the Transmission System Operator's Training Program. Must be NERC certified prior to working independently on shift.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education — B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant experience. Experience — Experience with generators, transformers, power circuit breakers, relaying and protection principles and switching practices will be helpful. Certification/License, etc — Must be NERC certified prior to working independently on shift. Must be able to obtain and maintain FFD program Integrity Clearance. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities — Must have proven oral and written communication skills. Candidate may be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on position / access requirements and essential job functions.
