Department Public Works-Water Location Default Salary $20.69-$25.21/ Hour Open Date 03/26/2026 Description Job Description The duties of the Lead Water Maintenance Worker are to lead and participate in the work of a crew engaged in the construction repair and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Job Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification; only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional; position-specific duties. Performs scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance and repairs of the water and wastewater systems in all types of weather conditions. Performs and recommends methods for cost-effective repair; maintenance and installation of water and wastewater lines. Supervises and leads assigned employees. Assists in the interviewing and hiring process for Water Maintenance Workers. Prepares and delivers performance evaluations for assigned employees. Trains and/or assists in training employees and/or co-workers. Assists in purchasing of supplies and equipment. Maintains accurate records and documentation of work orders; repairs; etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of two (2) years' experience in water distribution or related field. Must be able to work an "on-call" duty schedule; as assigned or in severe weather conditions when needed. Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience; preferred. Minimum of one (1) year of basic computer experience; preferred.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Valid Texas driver's license and acceptable driving record. Valid Class "B" CDL; preferred; OR ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. TCEQ Class "C" or higher Water License or higher; preferred.
Required Skill in:
Ability to operating a variety of equipment including hand tools; chain saws; mowers; weed eaters; etc. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and carry out assigned job duties. Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff; supervisor; and the public. Ability to follow safety policies; procedures; and practices. Ability to read; comprehend and follow applicable local; State; and Federal laws; codes; regulations; and ordinances. Ability to maintain a professional manner when interacting with City employees and the public. Ability to read and interpret maintenance and equipment manuals. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to provide and monitor activities; goals and objectives of staff members and the department. Ability to prepare performance evaluations and make recommendations regarding employees' job performance. Ability to instruct and train in industry methods and procedures.
Reasoning Abilities:
Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public. Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations. Ability to think quickly; maintain self-control and adapt to stressful situations. Ability to use good judgement and effectively problem-solve.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form. Ability to read City policies and procedures; written instructions; general correspondence; MSDS sheets; safety manuals; traffic signs and warning labels.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate mathematical calculations (addition; subtraction; multiplication; division). Physical Demands:
May be exposed to various weather conditions; potentially dangers tools; equipment; and machinery; heights; and hazardous chemicals. Work may include physical activities such as balancing; stooping; kneeling; crouching; standing; walking; pushing; pulling; lifting; grasping; feeling; talking; hearing/listening; seeing/observing; bending/twisting and performing repetitive motions. Job requires lifting of heavy objects weighing approximately 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close; distant and peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
Inside and outside environment during all kinds of weather events. Repetitive activities (performance of same physically demanding activity). Dirty environment ((situations in which workers or their clothing can become dirty; greasy; etc.). May work in ditches; trenches or confined spaces. May be exposed to air contamination (dust; fumes; toxic odors; etc.). May come in contact with hazardous materials or gases.
