Job Description

Job Title:
Machine Set-Up Technician Job Description The Machine Set-Up Technician prepares, adjusts, and operates plastic forming and molding equipment in a custom production environment. This role sets up and tears down tooling and fixtures, operates CNC, trimming, thermoforming, and rotational molding machines, and supports production from first-run troubleshooting through routine operation. The technician works closely with quality assurance, follows detailed work orders and production schedules, and assists across departments as needed in a small, highly collaborative shop. Responsibilities Set up and tear down tooling and fixtures on designated machines, including large thermoforming machines and rotational molding equipment. Operate CNC and trimming machinery as well as plastic forming and molding machines to produce custom parts. Load raw materials and products into machines and adjust frames to match the size of the plastic sheet being processed. Configure machines according to the size of the plastic sheet and required cycle time for each production run. Inspect tooling and equipment before and after processing to ensure safe and efficient operation. Monitor machine operation, detect problems during first runs, and troubleshoot issues quickly to maintain product quality and throughput. Use hand and power tools to tear down machines, change over equipment, and install new tooling for custom orders. Read and interpret custom work orders, blueprints, and work instructions to set up machines correctly and follow the production schedule to meet goals. Work closely with the quality department and obtain approval from quality assurance before running full production. Run production parts in addition to performing machine set-ups and tear downs. Assist with routine preventive maintenance on machines to support reliability and uptime. Lift materials and components up to 40-50 lbs as needed during set-up and production activities. Use a tape measure and basic shop math to verify dimensions and ensure accurate machine settings. Work either independently running production or as part of a two-operator team, depending on the product and machine. Adapt to a custom shop environment where each tooling set-up is different and participate in training to learn new machine configurations. Support other areas of the shop, including shipping and additional departments, when needed, and be willing to perform a variety of tasks beyond core machine operation. Follow all safety procedures, housekeeping standards, and company policies while maintaining a clean and organized work area. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience setting up and tearing down production machines. Proficiency using hand and power tools such as screwdrivers, power drills, impact wrenches, and levels. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, custom work orders, and written work instructions. Experience with machine set-up, tear down, and changeovers in a manufacturing environment. Experience operating machines such as injection mold, rotational mold, plastic forming, or thermoforming equipment. Ability to troubleshoot machine and process issues during initial and ongoing production runs. Capability to lift up to 50 lbs safely and repeatedly as required by the role. Ability to read a tape measure accurately and apply basic shop math for measurements and adjustments. Comfort working with CNC and trimming machinery in a production setting. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality when setting up and running machines. Willingness to collaborate closely with quality assurance and follow their direction before starting production. Flexibility to perform both machine set-up and machine operation tasks as production needs change. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience as a machine operator, machine set-up technician, machine tender, or machine repair technician in a manufacturing environment. Experience working with plastic forming processes, including thermoforming and rotational molding. Familiarity with preventive maintenance tasks on production machinery. Ability to work effectively in a small, custom shop where tooling and jobs frequently change. Strong problem-solving mindset with the confidence to identify and communicate process improvements. Self-motivated and self-aware approach, with the ability to understand the bigger picture of production goals. Comfort working both independently and as part of a small team on shared equipment. Why Work Here? Employees join a close-knit, family-owned custom shop where collaboration, long-term relationships, and mutual support are highly valued. The team enjoys a small, family-like environment with an average tenure of around five years, including many long-standing machine operators. The organization offers annual performance-based raises, paid half-days before most holidays once hired permanently, and occasional perks such as pizza parties. Leadership encourages self-awareness, open feedback, and a problem-solving mindset, inviting every employee to contribute ideas for improving processes and outcomes. Work Environment The role is based in a privately owned, family-oriented custom manufacturing facility with approximately 35 employees. The shop operates as a large, clean production environment where plastic sheets are formed and molded for various industries, without the strong odors associated with plastic production. Work is performed primarily on a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in a contract-to-hire arrangement. The culture is highly team-oriented, with a strong expectation that everyone works together, wears many hats, and helps wherever needed across departments, including shipping and other areas. The company emphasizes self-awareness, self-motivation, and a willingness to speak up with ideas for improvement, fostering a collaborative and problem-solving atmosphere focused on meeting production goals together.
