$77,313.60-$91,374.40 The Opportunity Alameda County is seeking a hands-on installer with experience wiring vehicles and installing automotive electrical or electronic equipment. This position installs radios, emergency lighting, sirens, antennas, cameras, laptop docking stations, license plate readers, broadband equipment, and other communications and public-safety equipment in County vehicles. This opportunity may be a strong fit for someone with experience in emergency vehicle upfitting, automotive electrical systems, car audio or alarm installation, fleet telematics, GPS and camera installation, two-way radio installation, or other 12-volt vehicle electronics. What You Will Do Responsibilities may include: Install mobile radios, license plate readers, laptop docking stations, broadband devices, cameras, siren controllers, and related equipment in County vehicles. Install control heads, speakers, sirens, microphones, switches, antennas, lightbars, and other vehicle-mounted equipment. Route, connect, secure, and protect electrical wiring and cables. Drill and cut openings and mount equipment safely and securely. Test electrical connections and installed equipment to confirm proper operation. Use multimeters and other tools to identify basic electrical problems. Remove communications and electronic equipment from old or damaged vehicles. Repair microphones and related components by soldering connections and replacing cords, cartridges, capacitors, resistors, or transistors. Design and fabricate brackets, covers, and containers to fit different vehicles. Use shop equipment such as drill presses, grinders, punches, brakes, shears, MIG welders, and acetylene torches. Assist Telecommunications Technicians with more complex troubleshooting and repairs. Set up public-address or audio/visual equipment for County functions. Follow all applicable electrical, vehicle, equipment, and workplace safety procedures. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have the equivalent of at least ONE (1) YEAR of full-time experience in one or more of the following areas: Automotive electrical work Automotive mechanical work Cable installation Alarm installation An acceptable combination of education and relevant experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may also be considered. Highly Desirable Experience The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with one or more of the following: 12-volt automotive electrical systems Public-safety or emergency vehicle upfitting Mobile radio or two-way radio installation Emergency lighting, sirens, speakers, or control systems GPS, telematics, dash cameras, or vehicle tracking equipment Car audio, vehicle alarms, remote-start systems, or other aftermarket electronics Relays, fuses, wire sizing, connectors, and power distribution Reading vehicle wiring diagrams and equipment installation instructions Using multimeters and other automotive electrical testing equipment Soldering, crimping, terminating, and protecting electrical connections Fabricating and installing vehicle-equipment mounting brackets MECP, EVT, ASE, or other relevant automotive electrical or mobile-electronics training or certification is desirable but not required. Knowledge and Skills Successful candidates should be able to: Understand basic automotive electricity, including relays, fuses, resistors, wire sizing, power, and grounding. Safely install electrical and electronic equipment without damaging the vehicle or its factory systems. Follow wiring diagrams, written instructions, and equipment specifications. Use hand tools, power tools, soldering equipment, and electrical testing equipment. Work carefully in confined or awkward areas inside vehicles. Organize wiring and equipment so installations are safe, secure, and professional. Diagnose basic installation and electrical problems. Work independently while asking for assistance when needed. Adapt when assignments and priorities change. Maintain accurate records and pay close attention to detail. Communicate effectively and provide good customer service. License and Special Requirements Possession of a valid California driver's license. Ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 70 pounds. Ability to work in confined and awkward spaces. Ability to climb poles and towers up to 200 feet, when required by the assignment.
