Job Description The Composite Technician I fabricates, assembles, and repairs advanced composite structures using materials such as carbon fiber, Kevlar, and fiberglass. Working under supervision, this role involves reading and interpreting blueprints, preparing molds and forms, and performing material lay-up, curing, trimming, drilling, bonding, and finishing processes to meet precise engineering specifications. The technician ensures high-quality workmanship through detailed inspections, accurate documentation, and close collaboration with engineering, quality, and fabrication teams, while maintaining a safe and well-organized work area. Responsibilities Fabricate, assemble, and repair composite structures using materials such as carbon fiber, Kevlar, fiberglass, honeycomb, adhesives, and similar materials. Read and interpret detailed blueprints, engineering drawings, templates, and authorized documents to determine dimensions, tolerances, and assembly sequences. Precisely align and fit composite parts and subassemblies according to engineering drawings and specifications, ensuring proper orientation and fit between components. Apply structural adhesives, sealants, and bonding agents to join composite components using proper techniques to ensure strong, durable bonds and prevent contamination. Install mechanical fasteners such as rivets, bolts, and screws using hand and power tools, verifying torque values and fastener placement according to specifications. Integrate hardware such as inserts, bushings, and brackets, and mate composite parts with metallic and non-metallic elements to assemble complex structures. Prepare bonding surfaces by sanding, cleaning, and treating as required to ensure optimal adhesion and structural integrity. Set up and use assembly jigs, fixtures, molds, mandrels, and templates to maintain dimensional accuracy and repeatability during assembly processes. Perform material lay-up and lamination operations, including marking and cutting tape, woven material, and prepreg following templates, guides, or specified dimensions and sequences. Route, drill, trim, and sand composite parts to blueprint dimensions and tolerances using appropriate tools and techniques. Perform basic functional checks such as fit, movement, and alignment, and conduct preliminary inspections to verify assembly quality before final inspection. Record assembly steps, process parameters, and any deviations from standard procedures, and maintain required records in an accurate and timely manner. Communicate findings, issues, and improvement suggestions to supervisors, engineering, and quality teams to help resolve assembly challenges and enhance processes. Support quality processes by keeping the work area clean and orderly, returning tools, equipment, and materials to proper storage after use. Follow all applicable laws, regulations, procedures, and company policies when performing work and completing documentation. Work in a safe manner at all times, adhering to established operating procedures and safety practices, including the use of required personal protective equipment. Operate equipment and tools associated with composite manufacturing, such as vacuum bagging systems and autoclaves, as needed for fabrication and curing processes. Assist in the preparation of molds and forms used in composite lay-up and assembly operations. Perform simple mathematical calculations to support measurement, layout, and assembly tasks. Essential Skills Experience working with or strong familiarity with assembly, fabrication, or mechanical work. Hands-on experience with composite manufacturing processes such as lay-up, lamination, and fabrication. Ability to read and interpret detailed blueprints, engineering drawings, and other authorized documents. Ability to verbally communicate clearly and follow written and verbal instructions. Capability to perform simple mathematical calculations to support measurements and layout. Proficiency in using hand tools such as rollers, paper cutters, scissors, X-Acto knives, electric heat guns, and related shop tools. Ability to use fixtures such as molds, mandrels, jigs, and templates during assembly and lay-up. Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for precise trimming, drilling, bonding, and finishing operations. Strong work ethic and demonstrated work stability. Work Environment The role is based in a manufacturing environment focused on advanced composite and aerospace systems. You will work around equipment such as molds, mandrels, jigs, fixtures, vacuum bagging setups, and autoclaves, and regularly use hand and power tools, measuring instruments, and heat tools. The facility can be loud, and you will follow established safety procedures and may be required to use personal protective equipment, including a respirator if certified.
