Job Description

Description The Spring Hill GPS Assistant Plant Manager (APM) leads manufacturing operations on a 24-hour, 7-day schedule. The role manages a large team of hourly and salaried employees across multiple shifts and two independent engine programs. The APM has direct responsibility for people leaders in manufacturing operations and for the execution of plant business processes. The APM ensures that production, safety, quality, cost, and engagement objectives are met, and that organizational and divisional goals are achieved. The APM delegates tasks to key area managers in production and technical operations and is accountable for meeting production schedules, employee engagement and inclusion KPIs, and departmental/plant budget targets
LEVEL EXPECTATIONS
The APM is a senior manager responsible for overall Spring Hill GPS operations and for shaping plant business strategy.
The APM:
Serves as the primary operations leader for Area Managers and select individual contributors (e.g., Plant Planner, GMS Coordinator). Builds high-performing teams, providing clear strategy, direction, expectations and support. Leads and champions cultural change throughout the organization. Identifies opportunities for improvement and drives continuous improvement to improve Key Performance Indicators. Is capable of complex change management (system, culture, policy) Participates in community outreach programs and can serve as a public representative for the plant
EXPERTISE
The APM :
Is equipped with advanced knowledge of GPS machining and assembly systems and possesses broad leadership experience across Safety, Global Supply Chain, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, HR Policy and UAW relationships. Understands the capability and function of vital IT systems, e.g., FACS, Flexnet, GSIP, Bauer engine test systems, etc. Uses independent judgment to make professional, managerial decisions, and leads teams to deliver on plans. Drives the development and compliance of corporate/local policies and processes. Drives the integration of best practices. Advises senior leadership and takes appropriate action for events and risks that directly affect organizational results. Understands capacity planning and can adjust to tactical changes while minimizing impact to operations.
COMPLEXITY
The APM operates in a complex environment and: Partners with executive management to develop strategic plans and translates them into actionable plant strategies, adjusting resources as business needs change. Guides teams in resolving complex issues and situations. Plays a key role in developing long-term strategy for their area, contributing to overall functional and organizational direction. Develops people-based resource plans, ensuring team members grow their skills and competencies. Builds a performance-based culture focused on developing top talent and aligning work with individual strengths. Engages with senior management, executives, and customers to negotiate on issues that impact the function. Aligns multiple stakeholder perspectives to reach agreement on complex topics and manages conflict resolution across the areas they lead or support. Maintains effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels, navigating sensitive or conflicting communication situations.
SCOPE AND IMPACT
The APM :
Works with senior management to develop and implement strategic plans and objectives. Has a strong, established network of key resources within Central Manufacturing Engineering, Strategy & Planning, Headquarters Continuous Improvement Teams Holds themselves accountable for delivering operating schedules. Provides a long-term perspective and often leads critical, cross-functional projects with broad impact. Builds and manages large teams (often teams of teams) with an optimal mix of talent and experience. Makes internal and external staffing decisions, supports development of direct reports, and creates a performance-based culture. Champions large-scale, high-risk change management Models GM behaviors. Owns delivery of critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Key Strategic Initiatives that are aligned with company objectives. Has impact that extends beyond their own department.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety & Culture Develop and lead a strong safety culture within the plant. Promote and continuously improve a "Workplace of Choice" environment. Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to company policies and procedures. Comply with local and national labor agreements. Uphold GM's vision, values, and cultural behaviors. Operations Management Manage day-to-day operations at the facility and coordinate activities within and across plant departments. Achieve Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environmental metrics and meet budget goals. Maintain corporate and unit management control systems, budgets, and performance-monitoring information. GMS Leadership Lead through teaching Global Manufacturing System (GMS) operating requirements. Serve as a GMS Principal lead for regional GMS activities. Drive compliance to all statements within the GMS Principles. Cross-functional Collaboration Work closely with other departments within and outside the manufacturing production team. Maintain strong relationships with other plant leaders and external customers. Understand product architectures and work leverage support from Resident Product Engineer People Leadership Coach, train, develop, and evaluate salaried teams. Participate in the selection of salaried people leaders to effectively execute operations. Hold ongoing career discussions and align roles and assignments with team members' strengths.
