Environmental Lead Job Description The Environmental Lead supports and maintains all functions of the environmental department while serving as the primary point of communication to leadership on environmental and maintenance-related matters. This role oversees a team of four, including equipment operators, pickers, and cleaners, ensuring all daily activities meet strict Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards. The Environmental Lead assists with maintenance reporting and related tasks to reduce downtime and improve overall operational performance. Success in this position requires a strong understanding of machinery, tools, repair processes, raw materials, production workflows, quality control practices, and methods for improving operational efficiency, with a core objective of achieving excellence in safety, productivity, and product quality. Responsibilities Oversee daily work performed by equipment operators, pickers, and cleaners to ensure compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards. Serve as the primary point of communication to leadership regarding environmental and maintenance-related matters. Support production tasks as needed to maintain smooth operations and meet production goals. Perform picking, loading, and unloading of shipments in a safe and efficient manner. Conduct general cleaning and maintenance duties to keep work areas safe, orderly, and compliant. Remove trash and debris through sweeping, shoveling, and other housekeeping activities to maintain a clean and hazard-free environment. Assist with maintenance reporting and related tasks to reduce downtime and improve overall equipment performance. Apply knowledge of machinery, tools, repair processes, and raw materials to support continuous improvement in production workflows. Monitor product quality and support quality control practices to consistently deliver high-quality outcomes. Promote safe work practices and ensure hazard-free areas for employees, customers, and visitors. Support all company safety initiatives and contribute to a culture of safety and compliance. Carry out additional assignments and duties as directed to support operational and environmental objectives. Essential Skills Minimum of 2+ years of experience in industrial or environmental fields. Approximately 2-3 years of experience working in an outdoor environment. Prior supervisory or managerial experience, preferably 2-3 years of lead or supervisory experience. Experience handling universal waste. Experience with forklift operations. Experience using a warehouse management system. Experience with general construction activities. Ability to perform computer data entry accurately. Experience in picking and production environments. Demonstrated experience leading a team in an operational setting. Experience with asbestos abatement or related environmental remediation activities. Strong understanding of machinery, tools, repair processes, raw materials, production workflows, and quality control practices. Ability to promote and maintain safe work practices in alignment with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a steel, metal, or auto recycling operation is beneficial. Comfort working in high-noise, dusty, and outdoor/indoor industrial environments. Ability to communicate clearly with team members and leadership regarding environmental and maintenance issues. Strong organizational skills to oversee multiple tasks, priorities, and team members. Work Environment The facility operates as a long-established steel, metal, and auto recycling operation with more than a century of history. The Oakland site includes an indoor production area and a large outdoor yard featuring heavy machinery, moving equipment, and high-noise conditions. The environment is dusty and industrial, and this role primarily works inside the warehouse located at the front of the site while remaining closely connected to yard operations. The morning shift runs from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with overtime on Saturdays as needed, and candidates must be comfortable working overtime as the site currently operates on two Saturdays per month. Steel-toe shoes, work pants, and a plain t-shirt or sweater are required, and a safety vest must be worn as the outer layer; the safety vest is provided by the company. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oakland, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $30.00/hr.
