This role goes far beyond routine production—every project we take on is custom-built for the music and live event world, demanding technical expertise, creative problem-solving, and a sharp eye for detail. As Build Operations Manager, you'll lead the shop floor through complex scenic fabrications while working in tandem with the designers in translating creative concepts into clear, actionable plans. You'll oversee timelines, manage crew scheduling, and ensure each build meets our high standards for quality, safety, and precision. The ideal candidate excels at turning challenges into solutions and staying hands-on while keeping the big picture in focus. We're looking for someone who can blend leadership with craftsmanship—someone who can guide a team, keep production moving, and bring bold ideas to life on time and on point.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Interpret fabrication drawings and turn designs into fully built scenic elements.
  • Break projects into clear steps, delegate tasks, and manage shop workflow to meet deadlines.
  • Oversee multiple builds and help leadership adjust priorities as needed.
  • Intake labor budgets on each job and dole out shifts to all crew, with ability to adjust and communicate any needs to leadership.
  • Management of crew attendance and time off needs.
  • Implement new tools, materials, and techniques that drive innovation.
  • Solve problems quickly in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively to meet project goals.
  • Coordinate closely with leadership on scheduling and production timelines.
  • Maintain top-tier craftsmanship and attention to detail.
  • Support a positive shop culture through cross-training and mentorship.
  • Lead day-to-day shop operations and keep builds on track and efficient.
  • Participate in shop builds.
MINIMUM SKILLS + QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in scenic fabrication or related build environments.
  • 3+ years of leadership and manager experience with crews of 3-15 people.
  • Proficient in the use and surveillance of Google calendar and Drive, slack, and e-mail.
  • Strong working knowledge of tools, materials, and workflows used in scenic or custom construction shops.
  • Confident in reading, interpreting, and executing from fabrication drawings.
  • Consistent, punctual, and dependable under tight deadlines.
  • Clear communicator with a professional attitude and ability to give and receive feedback.
  • Proven ability to manage builds from start to finish with accuracy and minimal oversight.
  • Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs and working safely in an active shop setting.
  • Committed to clean, organized, and safety-first work habits.
  • Self-motivated, accountable, and able to stay focused in a fast-paced shop.
  • Team-oriented with a problem-solving mindset—no ego, no drama.
  • Experience and ability to work in Fusion360.
  • Portfolio, work samples, or photos of past projects strongly encouraged.
PREFERRED SKILLS + EXPERIENCE
  • Experience with custom, one-off projects.
  • Live-event production experience or touring carpenter experience.
  • Experience in theatrical scene shops or technical director experience.
BENEFITS & CULTURE
  • Compensation:
    Starts at $35 an hour, depending on experience
  • Overtime:
    Paid at time and a half after 40 hours in a single work week.

    Full-time, on-site position, 36+ hours per week, Tuesday through Friday 8AM - 6PM, with necessary dedication to overtime and weekend shifts leading up to deadlines, should it be required. Lunch is off the clock.
  • Yearly reviews and semi-annual check-ins, allowing a space for renegotiations and discussion.
