We're a minority-owned metal fabrication and industrial maintenance company on a growth tear, and we're looking for someone who wants to run a shop, build a team from scratch, and put their name on the P&L. Not manage a lane. Run the thing. The Job, Straight Up This isn't a design-desk gig. You'll be on the floor setting priorities, quoting jobs, engineering fixes, and teaching. Most of our fabricators walked in with zero experience and got built here. Your job is to take them from "can do it with help" to "can teach it to the next guy." That's the real work. You'll also learn to quote. Estimating is what caps how much work we can take on right now so this role is literally how we grow. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with the owner, who currently carries the shop's technical and training load. Over your first year, that becomes yours, with him mentoring you the whole way. Daily priorities, sequencing, capacity, and schedule risk before it becomes a customer problem. The people. Teach layout, fit-up, forming, welding, finishing, and inspection to fabricators early in their careers. Build and maintain our skills matrix. Run performance reviews. The numbers. Revenue and margin on Fabrication and Custom Jobs. Quote using our pricing calculator labor, machine time, materials and protect margin on every job. The engineering. 2D/3D models and drawings (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar), jigs, fixtures, tooling, and mechanical assemblies. Manufacturability and safety checks before anything hits the floor. The customer relationship. From quote handoff through shipment, you're the technical point of contact. The shop culture. Safety, PPE, hot-work procedures, OSHA compliance, and a clean floor for everyone, including yourself. What You Bring 7+ years in metal fabrication, machine building, or industrial manufacturing including 2+ years leading, training, or mentoring people. A bachelor's in mechanical engineering or equivalent hands-on experience. We care what you can do and what you can teach, not where you learned it. Real hands-on time with a shear, press brake, saws, drills, CNC plasma, and MIG/TIG welding. CAD proficiency and the ability to read blueprints and weld symbols like a second language. Estimating or quoting chops, takeoffs, labor hours, margin. The patience and communication skill to teach someone who's never held a torch before.
Nice to have:
AWS D1.1/D1.2 or CWI certification, OSHA 30, registered apprenticeship experience, working Spanish or Portuguese, Lean/Six Sigma background.
The Practical Stuff Pay:
$85,000-$105,000/year, depending on experience
Schedule:
Monday-Friday, day shift, ~40 hrs/week, occasional flex for deadlines
