POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Night Shift Assembly Line Supervisor is a working, floor-based leader responsible for the safe, timely, and quality-compliant operation of the assigned assembly line. This position serves as the primary link between production team members and production management by translating production plans into daily line execution, communicating floor conditions and results, and coordinating immediate support when issues arise. The Supervisor is expected to remain visible and engaged on the production floor throughout the shift.
NIGHT-SHIFT AVAILABILITY - ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT
Current anticipated shift: 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The night-shift schedule may change based on production requirements, including a possible future schedule of approximately 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Candidates must be able and willing to work a flexible night schedule, including schedule changes, overtime, weekends, and holidays when required by production needs. Regular and reliable attendance, punctual arrival before line start-up, and availability through shift handoff are essential functions of this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the assigned assembly line during the night shift and ensure safe start-up, stable production, proper shutdown, and clear shift handoff. Translate the daily production plan and management direction into clear work assignments for team leads and production team members. Assign and adjust operators by workstation based on staffing, skills, absences, line balance, and production priorities; arrange safe relief coverage for breaks and temporary absences. Monitor hourly production output, downtime, cycle time, defects, scrap, equipment conditions, and material availability; accurately document and report results. Serve as the communication bridge between the production floor and production management. Promptly escalate safety, quality, equipment, manpower, material, and delivery risks with accurate facts and status updates. Respond immediately to line alarms and abnormalities. Stop production when necessary to protect people or product, contain suspected nonconforming material, and coordinate support from Quality, Maintenance, Materials, and Engineering. Never bypass alarms, interlocks, mistake-proofing controls, safety devices, or required inspections. Ensure defective or suspect products are identified, segregated, and handled according to company procedures. Verify compliance with work instructions, standard work, Q-Point and autonomous inspection requirements, daily equipment checks, traceability, and other production and quality controls. Conduct shift start meetings and communicate safety topics, quality alerts, production targets, staffing assignments, change points, and special instructions. Train, coach, and monitor team leads and production team members; reinforce safe work practices, product quality, attendance, workplace conduct, and performance expectations. Support new-hire and cross-training plans, confirm operator qualification, and provide factual performance feedback to production management. Maintain 3S/5S standards and ensure workstations, aisles, tools, fixtures, containers, and production records remain clean, organized, and controlled. Confirm parts and consumables are available before shortages affect production and communicate replenishment needs to Materials personnel. Participate in root-cause investigation, corrective action, continuous improvement, line balancing, productivity improvement, and defect-reduction activities. Prepare complete end-of-shift reports covering output, downtime, defects, manpower, material issues, equipment concerns, actions taken, and open items requiring follow-up. Perform production work or provide temporary line coverage when needed, consistent with training and safe staffing requirements. Perform other related duties as assigned based on business and production needs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required; technical school, associate degree, or relevant manufacturing coursework preferred. At least 2 years of manufacturing or assembly-line experience preferred; prior team lead or supervisory experience strongly preferred. Ability to lead employees on the production floor, give clear direction, address routine performance issues, and escalate matters appropriately. Working knowledge of assembly operations, standardized work, quality checks, defect control, line balance, safety requirements, and 3S/5S. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, email, and production/ERP or monitoring systems; ability to complete accurate shift reports. Strong communication and coordination skills across Production, Quality, Maintenance, Materials, Engineering, HR, and management. Ability to work the flexible night-shift schedule described above and adapt to production-driven schedule changes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed primarily on the production floor around moving mechanical parts, conveyors, powered tools, vibration, and industrial noise. Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and temperature variation may occur. Ability to stand and walk for most of the shift; bend, stoop, squat, reach, push, pull, handle tools and parts, and visually inspect products and equipment. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently and heavier items only with approved assistance or lifting devices, in accordance with site procedures. Required personal protective equipment must be worn, and all safety rules must be followed at all times.
GENERAL CONDITIONS
This job description summarizes the primary duties of the position and is not intended to be all-inclusive. Duties, responsibilities, schedules, and activities may change based on business needs. The employee must comply with all company safety, quality, attendance, dress, cell-phone, and workplace rules.
