Full Job Description Summary :
Grinds and smooths surfaces of metal components and parts by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
Examines and feels surface of workpiece for defects. Selects type of hand-held grinding equipment to be used and selects grade of abrasive belt, wheel, or disk according to specifications, knowledge of abrasives, and condition of metal and attaches to grinder. Operates hand-held grinder and moves it over surface of workpiece to remove scratches, laminated metal, excess weld material, and burrs. Deslags parts and polishes ground areas with finer abrasive to produce smooth, unmarred surface. Sets up and operates grinding machines by setting controls, placing parts into machine, starting machine, and running parts. Performs first-piece and in-process inspection by checking dimensions of part per blueprint using tape measure or appropriate alternate. Inspects parts according to C=0 chart. Completes inspection form. Performs preventative maintenance on grinding equipment, including but not limited to replacing worn abrasive disks, wheels, and belts, greasing and cleaning machines, and checking water and coolant levels. Completes maintenance log. Performs other duties as assigned. Communicates with Building Manager on daily production requirements for department. Receives instructions/job priority list. Ensures Dispatch list is followed by all team members according to expedite priority and start date. Communicates issues with machines programs, fixturing, or process problems with Quality, Programming, and the Building Managers. Trouble-shoots issues with equipment with assistance from other team members if necessary. Assists maintenance with technical aspects of equipment. Enters requests into Sharepoint indicating machine problems. Communicates normal/high requests to Building Manager as well. Trains and coaches employees in work area. Assigns mentor for individual machines. Helps develop new skills in employees of department by identifying training needs. Responsible to ensure trainees have 100% of training checklist completed by end of probationary period - or communicates to Building Manager training/potential disqualifying issues by 60-day mark. Assists in conducting pre-hire interviews and performance evaluations. Provides continuous feedback to Building Manager employees regarding work performance of team. Maintains team communication board. Enforces, trains team members and follows all safety and general work rules/procedures for the shop. Recommends staffing changes or ideas to Building Manager as needed to improve productivity of shift. Ensures PM forms are filled out daily. Reviews Safety/QMS performance for the team for previous 24 hours. Records OEE efficiency for team equipment or processes. Performs other duties as assigned. Ensures PM forms are filled out daily. Ensures that every team member has proper PPE at all times Addresses unsafe work environment immediately and takes action to correct the issues along with the assistance of the supervisor Includes safety communication with every team member prior to shift Updates supervisors daily regarding any unsafe behaviors on the team Exercises sound judgment in being professional in their conduct and doing what is right whether or not anyone else is watching Demonstrates honesty and directness in communication Establishes trust among staff, colleagues, and superiors, demonstrates the ability to be trustworthy Follows tasks through to completion Willingness to accept critique or criticism from others. Demonstrates the willingness to change or improve and then move on with professionalism and grace Looks for new ways to solve old issues Assists supervisor in closing out hold tags within 24 hours consistently Participates with supervisor in any corrective action items for timely completion Helps to ensure that the team members know and follow the control plan consistently. Communicates with supervisor daily regarding any control plans that are not being followed Maintains team boards and ensures that they are up to date on a daily basis Assists the supervisor in ensuring that employee evaluations are scheduled in a timely manner, offers good judgement on employee evaluation scores, and helps to keep evaluations up to date Assists the supervisor in ensuring that employees are recognized for strong performance Assists the supervisor in ensuring that underperforming employee issues are being addressed with direct, honest feedback and coaching Exercises sound judgment in making recommendations to the supervisor regarding any team members violating company handbook policies Demonstrates a clear understanding of what it takes to win or lose in the production environment, motivates staff accordingly, and the area shows improvement over time Supervisory Duties Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education & Experience :
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required; previous manufacturing experience and/or training preferred. Must meet top level Operator qualifications in the division and have been working as a top level Operator within that division for a minimum of two years.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one.
Math Skills :
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10''s and 100''s.
Reasoning Skills :
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
