Job Title:
Production Supervisor Job Description The Production Supervisor oversees high-volume automotive production lines in a fast-paced, unionized environment, ensuring safety, quality, and delivery targets are consistently met. This role leads and develops team leaders and production staff, drives continuous improvement, and coordinates closely with support functions to resolve issues and optimize performance. Responsibilities Supervise, lead, coach, and direct team leaders and production employees to achieve production volume, cost, quality, and delivery targets. Manage daily production activities on the line, ensuring adherence to schedules and on-time delivery within a semi-just-in-time environment. Monitor and manage departmental performance measures, including visual controls, and provide regular progress reports to leadership. Plan and manage headcount to cover absences, holidays, training, workshops, and other staffing needs. Complete the Attendance Register daily to maintain accurate attendance records. Perform daily ADP data entry, including approving employee time and updating employee schedules. Direct and conduct standardized work audits, ensuring that all team members follow Standardized Work procedures. Work with team leaders to schedule operator rotations to balance workload and maintain flexibility on the line. Liaise with maintenance, health, safety and environment (HSE), quality, and other support functions to resolve build issues and prevent recurrence. Oversee and coordinate rework activities when required, ensuring quality standards are maintained. Manage the closure of line QRCIs and coach team leaders to react to issues quickly and resolve them independently. Ensure team members follow the principles of the 7 Quality Basics, including OK First Part, Poka Yoke, self-inspection, final inspection, red bins, controlled rework, and QRCI. Maintain strict adherence to company policies, safety standards, 5S, and good housekeeping practices across the production area. Promote and sustain a safe work environment, ensuring that safety is a daily priority for all team members. Drive continuous improvement in all areas of production, encouraging team members to propose improvement ideas and following up on their implementation. Coordinate with support functions when improvement ideas cannot be implemented directly by the team. Conduct disciplinary meetings, return-to-work interviews, and performance evaluation discussions with team members as needed. Validate operator polyvalence (cross-training) levels and set weekly polyvalence targets to build a flexible and capable workforce. Assist with additional tasks and projects as assigned by the company to support overall plant performance. Essential Skills Proven experience supervising production lines in an automotive manufacturing environment. Strong experience in production supervision and production management within a fast-paced setting. Experience working in a unionized environment, preferably with UAW-represented employees. Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop team leaders and production staff. Solid understanding of safety standards and practices in a manufacturing environment. Hands-on experience with continuous improvement initiatives and process improvement. Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and their application on the production floor. Familiarity with Six Sigma or similar structured problem-solving methodologies. Experience with assembly operations in a high-volume manufacturing setting. Ability to manage and interpret departmental performance measures and visual controls. Competence in using time and attendance systems such as ADP or similar tools. Strong communication skills to liaise effectively with maintenance, HSE, quality, and other support functions. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, semi-just-in-time production environment. Capability to work both collaboratively in a team setting and independently to achieve objectives. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience implementing and auditing standardized work on the production floor. Knowledge of 5S and good housekeeping practices in manufacturing. Familiarity with the 7 Quality Basics, including OK First Part, Poka Yoke, self-inspection, final inspection, red bins, controlled rework, and QRCI. Experience managing rework processes while maintaining quality and delivery commitments. Experience in conducting performance evaluations, disciplinary meetings, and return-to-work interviews. Experience managing operator polyvalence and cross-training programs. Comfort working within a large facility and coordinating with multiple departments and shifts. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based on the plant floor of a 340,000-square-foot automotive manufacturing facility built in 2012. The plant is very clean, updated, and organized, with approximately 1,000 employees working across three shifts. The environment is unionized (UAW - local 600) and operates at a very fast pace with a 1.5-day lead time on all production in a semi-just-in-time model. Two full-time nurses are on site to support any workplace injuries or health needs. The position requires frequent presence on the production floor, close interaction with production teams and support functions, and the ability to work both as part of a team and independently to drive results. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Detroit, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $35.00/hr.
