  • Part-time Joshua Warner Studios is seeking a reliable, organized, and hands-on Shop Foreman / Lead Carpenter to support scenic fabrication and experiential production projects in our Queens fabrication studio.
This role will begin as a flexible hourly position with scheduling based on active project workload, with the opportunity to grow into a larger long-term leadership position as the company continues to expand. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys the flexibility and variety of freelance work, but is looking for increased leadership opportunities, ownership over workflow, and the ability to help shape a growing fabrication environment. About JWS Joshua Warner Studios is a scenic design and fabrication studio specializing in theatre, live events, retail activations, and experiential environments. Our work ranges from Broadway and regional theatre to branded installations and custom fabrication projects. Position Overview The Shop Foreman / Lead Carpenter supports the day-to-day execution of fabrication projects within the shop. This role works closely with ownership, studio operations, and freelance labor teams to ensure projects are built safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. This is a working leadership position — ideal for someone who is comfortable both supervising a crew and actively participating in fabrication work. Hours may vary week to week depending on project volume. Some weeks may involve only a few shop days, while others may involve full production weeks leading up to installs or deliveries. We are open to candidates seeking supplemental work outside traditional shop schedules, including evenings and weekends when project needs require. Responsibilities Lead day-to-day shop workflow during active builds Delegate tasks and support overhire carpenters and fabricators Help maintain project schedules and production pacing Review and interpret drafting packages and construction details Identify fabrication challenges and communicate issues proactively Coordinate with studio operations regarding materials, priorities, and labor needs Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety standards within the shop Assist with load-ins, installs, strikes, and pickups as needed Support quality control throughout fabrication and prep processes Help maintain tools, equipment, and shared workspaces Qualifications 2-5 years of professional scenic fabrication, woodworking, or event fabrication experience preferred Ability to read and interpret drafting packages and shop drawings Strong understanding of scenic construction methods and materials Experience supervising crews or leading projects preferred Clear communication and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently and maintain momentum on projects Comfortable in a fast-paced, collaborative environment Valid driver's license preferred Experience with theatrical, experiential, or retail fabrication a plus Position Structure Flexible hourly W2 position Scheduling based on active project workload Primarily shop-based in Jamaica, Queens Opportunity for increased hours and long-term growth as workload expands Ideal for someone balancing freelance projects while looking for a consistent leadership role within a collaborative shop environment
