Production Supervisor - Structural Steel Manufacturing Position Summary The Production Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily shop floor operations within a designated department or shift (e.g., welding, fitting, cutting). This role ensures production activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules, weld procedures, and quality standards. The Production Supervisor directly manages production personnel and drives daily output, quality, and workflow performance. Key Responsibilities Daily Production & Schedule Execution Execute daily and weekly production schedules established by the Production Manager Assign work to welders, fitters, and operators based on priorities and manpower availability Monitor workflow to ensure jobs progress according to schedule and resolve bottlenecks in real time Track daily production output and report status, delays, and constraints Coordinate with upstream and downstream operations to maintain continuous workflow People Management & Floor Leadership Directly supervise welders, fitters, machine operators, and laborers Enforce attendance, productivity, and performance expectations Provide hands-on coaching, training, and development of team members Conduct shift meetings and communicate production goals and safety expectations Address employee issues, performance concerns, and disciplinary actions as needed Weld Quality & Inspection (Hands-On) Ensure all welding and fabrication activities comply with WPS, drawings, and applicable codes (AWS, AISC) Perform in-process inspections, including fit-up checks, joint preparation, and visual weld inspections Verify proper use of welding consumables and parameters Identify weld defects and initiate corrective actions immediately Coordinate with Quality Control and CWI personnel for final inspections and documentation Production Operations Oversee daily activities in assigned department (cutting, fitting, welding, or finishing) Ensure proper sequencing of work to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime Troubleshot fabrication and workflow issues on the shop floor Coordinate equipment usage and escalate maintenance needs when necessary Safety & Compliance Enforce all safety policies and procedures on the shop floor Ensure safe practices in welding, cutting, rigging, and material handling Conduct safety observations and address hazards immediately Participate in incident investigations and corrective actions Material Control & Traceability Ensure correct materials are used for each job, including verification of heat numbers and job tags Maintain material traceability throughout fabrication processes Coordinate with inventory and yard personnel to ensure material availability Cross-Functional Coordination Communicate production status and issues to Production Manager and other departments Coordinate with Quality Control to ensure inspection readiness Work with shipping to ensure completed work is staged and ready for shipment Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent 5-8 years of experience in structural or heavy steel fabrication 2-5 years of supervisory or lead experience Strong knowledge of welding processes (FCAW, GMAW, SMAW) and fabrication practices Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and weld symbols Preferred Qualifications Experience in structural/tubular steel manufacturing Familiarity with AWS and AISC standards Welding certifications or strong practical welding background Experience performing visual weld inspections Basic computer skills (ERP systems, production tracking) Work Environment Industrial steel fabrication shop with indoor/outdoor exposure Continuous presence on the shop floor Exposure to welding, noise, dust, and heavy equipment May require overtime or shift work to meet production demands Key Competencies Hands-on leadership and team supervision Daily production execution and problem-solving Weld quality enforcement and inspection awareness Communication and coordination Safety leadership Time management in a fast-paced environment
Pay:
$30-$32/hr. (+$4 shift differential
Shift:
