HVAC Sheet Metal / Duct Foreman Job Description This role supervises, coordinates, inspects, and performs the assembly, installation, and repair of HVAC sheet metal and duct components, subsystems, and systems for commercial construction, tenant finish-out, and remodel projects. The foreman leads a field crew, ensures work meets specifications and safety standards, and collaborates closely with an HVAC Superintendent to deliver high‑quality projects on time and within scope. Responsibilities Supervise and coordinate the assembly, installation, and repair of HVAC sheet metal and duct systems on commercial construction, tenant improvement, and remodel projects. Prepare material take-offs and plan required labor and resources for upcoming work packages. Lay out HVAC duct systems and create isometric and schematic sketches based on blueprints, specifications, submittals, and job orders. Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and product specifications to determine installation methods, sequencing, and fabrication details. Participate in job planning, including site set-up, construction schedules, and coordination with other trades as needed. Identify and eliminate construction and job site hazards as they arise to reduce safety incidents and severity. Organize, supervise, lead, and train sheet metal journeymen and apprentices to complete projects within established guidelines, quality standards, and time frames. Accurately estimate hours and material needs for scheduled jobs and communicate requirements to project leadership. Submit crew timesheets accurately and on time to meet payroll deadlines. Operate and supervise the operation of equipment and machinery such as forklifts, man-lifts, and power tools in a safe and efficient manner. Inspect work in progress and completed work to ensure conformance to project specifications, codes, and quality standards. Coordinate placement, staging, and storage of materials, tools, and supplies to support the construction plan and maintain an organized job site. Ensure proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed by all crew members at all times. Comply with and enforce all company policies, safety procedures, and job site requirements. Conduct regular tailgate safety meetings and reinforce safe work practices with the crew. Attend operations and coordination meetings as required to support project planning and execution. Fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal products and equipment, including ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, and furnace casings. Measure, cut, and bend sheet metal using appropriate hand tools, power tools, and machinery such as shears, brakes, and presses. Install and secure sheet metal products using soldering, welding, riveting, and other approved fastening methods. Install duct detectors and perform duct work installation in the correct sequence and order for efficient and code-compliant system assembly. Inspect assemblies and installations using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers to verify conformance to specifications. Maintain tools and equipment, performing repairs and minor modifications as necessary to ensure safe and reliable operation. Work collaboratively with the HVAC Superintendent to train and coach crew members, maintain high work quality standards, and support their professional growth. Essential Skills Proven experience in HVAC duct installation, including spiral and rectangular duct systems, from layout through final installation. Strong ability to supervise and lead sheet metal journeymen and apprentices on commercial construction projects. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, mechanical plans, sketches, and product specifications for HVAC and sheet metal work. Hands-on skill in sheet metal installation and fabrication, including measuring, cutting, and bending sheet metal. Ability to prepare material take-offs and create isometric and schematic sketches from construction documents. Competence in using hand tools, power tools, and sheet metal machinery such as shears, brakes, and presses. Experience installing duct detectors and understanding the proper order and sequencing of duct work installation. Knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols, incident reporting procedures, and job site safety practices. Ability to operate and oversee the safe use of forklifts, man-lifts, and related construction equipment. Strong organizational skills for coordinating materials, tools, and crew activities to support the construction plan. Capability to inspect work for conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing sheet metal products and equipment such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, and furnace casings. Background in commercial upfit and new construction environments, including projects such as restaurants, warehouses, and automotive dealerships. Ability to estimate labor hours and material requirements for scheduled HVAC sheet metal jobs. Experience conducting tailgate safety meetings and reinforcing safe work practices with field crews. Familiarity with maintaining and performing minor repairs or modifications on tools and equipment used in sheet metal and duct installation.
