Position Summary The Kiln Specialized Technician is responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and optimization of kiln systems used in ceramic production. This role ensures consistent product quality, energy efficiency, and safe kiln performance while supporting production targets and continuous improvement initiatives. This position hours will be 1:00 PM to 9:30 pm Monday to Friday +weekends/ emergency if needed This position does not offer relocation assistance. Key Responsibilities Operate and monitor kiln systems (roller kilns, tunnel kilns, shuttle kilns, etc.) to ensure proper firing cycles and product quality Set and adjust firing curves, temperature profiles, and kiln parameters based on product specifications Perform routine inspections of kiln components including burners, thermocouples, fans, refractory linings, and control systems Troubleshoot kiln-related issues such as temperature inconsistencies, defects (warping, cracking, color variation), and mechanical failures Coordinate with production, quality, and maintenance resources to optimize kiln performance and throughput Analyze kiln data and trends to improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and minimize waste Conduct preventive maintenance and assist in major kiln repairs or rebuilds Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and company procedures Maintain accurate logs of kiln performance, maintenance activities, and production results Support commissioning, calibration, and startup of new kiln equipment or upgrades Act as working shift supervisor when the production supervisor is on vacation, etc. Assist with directing and leading operators with their responsibilities Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or certification preferred (mechanical, electrical, or ceramics-related field) 3-7+ years of experience operating or maintaining kilns in the ceramic, tile, sanitaryware, or related industry Strong understanding of firing processes, heat transfer, and ceramic material behavior Experience with kiln control systems (PLC, SCADA, or similar automation platforms) Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and process data Preferred Qualifications Experience with energy optimization and combustion systems (gas burners, air flow control) Knowledge of refractory materials and kiln construction Familiarity with Industry 4.0 tools, sensors, and data analytics in manufacturing Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience Skills & Competencies Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities Attention to detail and commitment to product quality Mechanical and electrical aptitude Ability to work independently and in team environments Good communication and documentation skills Willingness to work in high-temperature environments and rotating shifts if required Working Conditions Industrial manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, dust, and noise Requires standing, walking, climbing, and occasional lifting Will require shift work Monday to Friday (Noon to 9pm), weekends, or on-call support Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Kiln uptime and reliability Product quality (defect rates related to firing) Energy consumption per unit produced Maintenance response and resolution time Compliance with safety and operational standards
