Job Description

The Pacific Northwest's premier steel fabricator, Thompson Metal Fab, Inc., is in immediate need of an experienced Industrial Journeyman Painter/Blaster. Serving the Civil, Hydro, Oil & Gas, and custom fabrication industries. We are an AISC, API, ASME, and WABO certified facility. With over 85 years in the industry, we have a reputation for producing some of the highest quality fabricated products on the West Coast. This position is available for swing shift: 3:00PM-1:30AM Mon-Thur. •All employees must pass a pre-employment drug screen and pre-employment physical. •We are seeking an experienced Weld Leadman to support our Welding Foreman and guide day-to-day fabrication activities in our structural steel shop. This is a hands-on, journeyman-level role responsible for coordinating workflow, training welders, maintaining quality, and ensuring safe, efficient operations. The ideal candidate is a skilled fabricator who leads by example and upholds the highest standards of craftsmanship and professionalism. Key Responsibilities Perform advanced welding tasks as needed, including FCM and RT-quality welds. Identify complex weldments, equipment needs, and potential risks; communicate proactively with the Welding Foreman and production teams. Train, mentor, and support welding personnel in proper techniques and procedures. Maintain organized work areas and ensure efficient sequencing of tasks. Monitor work quality and escalate issues to QC, Mechanics, or the Welding Foreman. Ensure compliance with welding procedures, quality standards, and all safety policies. Coordinate with welding management, quality, and production departments. Maintain required documentation, including welder IDs, consumable logs, and Job Control Documents (JCDs). Conduct daily shift-to-shift turnover communication. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum 5 years of heavy fabrication experience ; TMF experience preferred. Must meet all requirements of a Fab-1 classification or higher . Trained and authorized in forklift operation, scissor lifts, boom lifts, rigging, and overhead crane use. Strong welding proficiency in FCAW, GMAW, SMAW, and SAW processes. Effective communication skills with the ability to lead without formal supervisory authority. Strong problem-solving abilities and commitment to safety, quality, and productivity. Working Conditions Work is performed in a structural steel fabrication shop with exposure to welding, grinding, cutting, heat, noise, and heavy equipment. The role requires physical activity including welding, grinding, CAC, lifting, bending, climbing, working at heights or in confined spaces, and wearing all required PPE. Equal Opportunity Employer .
