Job Description

About the Role We're looking for an experienced Tooling & Layout Manager to lead the tooling design, construction, and day-to-day operations for a busy manufacturing facility. This is a hands-on management role with direct oversight of tooling engineers, pattern shop personnel, and layout staff — and real ownership over budgets, scheduling, quality, and customer relationships. What You'll Be Doing Lead and develop a team of tooling engineers, pattern shop personnel, and layout staff — setting priorities, managing capacity, and ensuring on-time delivery Partner directly with customers, sales, and purchasing to quote new tooling builds and manage projects from design through completion — on budget and on schedule Oversee the design and construction of tooling including VMM mold patterns, core setters, Laempe, D-75, CB, Loramendi, and shell core boxes Manage CNC machining, assembly, and polishing operations — balancing workloads and optimizing throughput Own quality control processes including dimensional accuracy checks and laser scanning Drive adoption of new technologies and materials (including 3D printing) to improve capabilities and efficiency Manage the department budget and equipment utilization Develop and maintain a 6S program across the department Provide hands-on training and mentorship to team members as needed What We're Looking For 5+ years of experience in tooling engineering, pattern making, or a related manufacturing discipline — including at least some experience leading or supervising technical staff Ability to create 3D models from 2D layout drawings and generate tool paths for large-precision CNC equipment Working knowledge of non-uniform shrink, draft, offset parting, and pattern offsets Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously Sharp problem-solving ability — you can diagnose a tooling issue and drive it to resolution without a lot of hand-holding Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working directly with customers and cross-functional teams
