Job Title:
Press Assistant / Converting Operator Job Description The Press Assistant / Converting Operator operates production machinery used for flexible packaging, including labels and printed boxes. This role focuses on running and monitoring converting and press equipment, maintaining mounting tools, and ensuring all plates and components are clean, inspected, and ready for each print run. The position suits someone mechanically inclined who enjoys hands-on work in a manufacturing environment and takes pride in producing high-quality, consistent output. Responsibilities Operate converting and press machines used to produce flexible packaging, including labels and printed boxes. Set up, run, and monitor production machinery to ensure efficient and consistent output throughout the shift. Utilize mounting equipment safely and effectively, ensuring it is properly set up and functioning before and during production. Clean and maintain mounting equipment regularly to keep it in good working condition and to minimize downtime. Handle plates used as molds for print runs, ensuring they are properly installed, removed, and stored. Clean plates as needed before storage or reuse to maintain print quality and extend plate life. Inspect each plate prior to use to confirm it meets quality standards and is free of damage or defects. Assist with general production tasks such as assembly and line work to support overall manufacturing output. Identify basic mechanical issues with the press or converting equipment and communicate or assist with troubleshooting. Follow all safety procedures and use provided personal protective equipment while operating machinery. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including machines and surrounding production space. Work collaboratively with team members and support other production activities as needed to meet production goals. Essential Skills At least 6 months of machine operation experience in a production or similar environment. At least 1 year of experience working within a manufacturing or production line setting. Demonstrated ability to operate production or press machinery safely and efficiently. Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools, equipment, and mechanical systems. Experience with assembly, production, or press machine work in a manufacturing environment. Ability to follow detailed instructions and quality standards for machine setup and operation. Strong attention to detail when inspecting plates, equipment, and finished product. Reliability and willingness to work scheduled shifts and support production demands. Commitment to following safety procedures and using personal protective equipment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous press machine experience is a plus and will be considered an advantage. Experience in flexible packaging, labels, or box printing environments is beneficial. Comfort working on a production line and collaborating with a small, close-knit team. Willingness to learn new equipment and processes and adapt to changing production needs. Why Work Here? The dress code includes steel toe boots, jeans or work pants without holes, and a t-shirt, reflecting a practical, hands-on production environment. The position operates on structured shifts, with a first shift running from 5:00 to 1:00 and a second shift from 1:00 to 9:00, offering clear scheduling and shift-based work. While the environment is accommodating to personal and family matters, there is an expectation of strong work ethic and focus during working hours. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ames, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
